The need is rising and we need your help more than ever.
If you had visited our Food Pantry last month, you would have noticed it was extra bustling with more clients than usual shopping for the food they so desperately need. That is because we had an all time high of 844 pantry visits in July. This surpasses our previous 2012 record which also included Thanksgiving meal distribution. Our numbers have been rising for the past year and unfortunately this is not a good thing and aligns with nationwide data that shows an increase in food insecurity.
FRAC's How Hungry is America? report shows a rise in 2017 in the national Food Hardship rate for the first time since 2013. This rise is significant. After the height of the recession, as the economy continued to recover, tens of millions of Americans still were being left behind by the failure of the economy to provide family-supporting wages.
The nation's unemployment rate continued to fall in 2017, but wages were largely stagnant, and safety net supports were cut. The resulting inability of people to consistently afford enough food for their household ultimately harms children, working-age adults, people with disabilities, and seniors. It harms health, learning, and productivity; and it drives up health care and other costs for families, employers, and government.
Locally, with your support, we will continue to serve our growing number of clients, but we need your help more than ever to be able to meet the increased need.
