The sorority, which stands for sisterhood, scholarship and service, is going back to its roots where it all began in Indy. Founded in 1922 by seven women at Butler University, the sorority maintains its focus of "Greater Service, Greater Progress." As we celebrate our continued growth in membership, the branding committee launched a newsletter to stay connected to chapter members. Here's the second edition of our Alpha Sigma Sigma newsletter, "Sigmas in the News!" featuring stories that highlight our Sisters, their work and many contributions. In April, it highlights Centennial Basileus Dharathula "Dolly" Harris, Soror Staci Bennett and Soror Sandran Westbrooks. Also, look for the "Special Announcements Section" listing current information regarding ICHQ National Activities and other special information in honor of You. "Don't Look Now, Alpha Sigma Sigma is on fire!"

Centennial Basileus steps up the ladder
|
|
Centennial Basileus Dharathula "Dolly" Harris was named the Superintendent of the Gary Parks Department effective Jan. 31. Basileus Harris said she started her journey in the parks department at Marquette Park in 2015.
"I was familiar with Marquette because that's where I got married 40 years ago," she said.
Working at Marquette, Basileus Harris learned about booking events, setting up events, giving tours, and even something as simple as properly folding napkins. Outside in the park, employees learn how to set up for outdoor weddings and those on the beach, including how to navigate and work in sand. There is always something to learn, she said. READ MORE

Soror focuses on ministry and her love for education

Soror Staci Bennett credits Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority for honing her leadership skills enabling her to become the successful educator she is today.
Bennett joined the Kappa Eta undergrad chapter at the University of Iowa.
"I was quiet then," she said with a smile. "They made me the rock which meant I always had to do all the talking. I think that speaks to the uniqueness of our sorority and how we purposely and intentionally bring out the best in people." READ MORE

Floridian Sister maintains her Gary ties

Although separated by nearly 1,000 miles, Soror Sandra Westbrooks remains active in the Alpha Sigma Sigma graduate chapter in Gary.
Soror Westbrook and her husband relocated from suburban Chicago to Orlando, FLA three years ago.
Soror Westbrooks said the word sisterhood is such an endearing term. "It means developing a second family comprised of an infinite number of sisters that increase exponentially each year," she said. "You get to know them. You establish a trust and belief system in them and soon recognize that your sister has your back." READ MORE

Cradle Care project nets numerous donations
|
|
Members of Gary's Alpha Sigma Sigma graduate chapter invited residents from across Northwest Indiana to donate to the sorority's Cradle Care Project.
Project Cradle Care is a national program designed to have a positive impact on the quality of life of children who are born prematurely or as a result of teen pregnancy.
It is a collaboration between Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and the March of Dimes. The program focuses on increasing the number of women who receive adequate prenatal education as well as educating mothers about proper infant care and child development.
Sooror Regina Duncan is chairperson of the chapter's Project Cradle Care.
"The Cradle Care program enables new mothers not to leave the hospital empty-handed," she said. "We try to provide some essentials and thoughtful items for the baby and mother."
Soror Duncan, along with several members of the Sorority presented the donation of clothes, blankets and other necessary items to the entire natal unit at Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary in mid-January.
This year, the sorority collected more than 100 blankets and several T-shirts, sleepers and onesies for babies.
Items can be donated year-round. Anyone who wants to make a donation should contact the Basileus or program chairperson to drop off items or arrange for pick up.

In March, we highlighted the women of Sigma Gamma Rho who daily make contributions to our society.
Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California in 1978. The movement spread across the country when other communities began creating their own celebrations. In 1980, the National Women’s History Project (National Women's History Alliance), women’s groups, and historians pushed for national recognition. President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8,1980 as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, it was designated Women's History Month.
