Crisis Management for Business Leaders

Stephanie York

Vice President and In-house Counsel
Hennes Communications

OSHA & discrimination complaints…active shooter situations…employee fraud… product defects…employee discontent…environmental events…industrial accidents…sexual misconduct…stupid Facebook posts…trade issues…transportation problems…regulatory issues.

Meanwhile, there’s a TV reporter in your parking lot looking for comment. A disaster can happen anytime. And when it does, you may only have minutes to respond.

It’s a fact: controversies today are tried in the Court of Public Opinion more often than in any Court of Law. Those reputational trials can greatly influence public perception and tarnish an organization’s brand. With the rampant use of social media, that threat has grown exponentially. The result: an organization’s most important asset can be significantly damaged before a legal trial even begins. Indeed, since most legal controversies are settled prior to trial, the Court of Public Opinion has arguably become the most important battleground not only for goodwill and market share, but also for legal bargaining and settlement negotiations. Managing this battleground has become critical for business leaders.
Since it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and only a few seconds to destroy one, “managing the message” is a necessary skill set for CEOs, executive directors, school officials, health care directors, attorneys and government officials, as well as other business leaders.

This presentation will focus on a highly strategic approach to communicating during a wide variety of situations, offering methods for establishing and maintaining “control of the message,” enabling you to move your message forward or mount a defense against a sudden onslaught from traditional or social media.

Stephanie York, J.D., Vice President and In-house Counsel for Hennes Communications, has over 25 years’ experience in law and communications, most of that time working in as an Assistant Director of Law and spokesperson for the City of Akron and former Mayor Don Plusquellic.

As COVID-19 leaves more people food insecure, our local foodbanks need our support now more than ever.

We hope you'll join us with a minimum donation of just $5. Remember, every $1 donated equals 4 meals!

Question: We have made changes to our training programs. What things should be considered for the documentation and proof of training?

Answer: Whether the training is virtual or in person, the need for documentation is the same. We have heard “if it’s not documented it wasn’t done. So document, document, document…

Here is a list of things you can include in your documentation:

  • Topic – such as Hazcom, LOTO, Emergency Preparedness

  • Agenda – what did you cover – keep details so you don’t forget

  • Format - online, webinar, in-person, hybrid

  • Date(s)

  • Name of trainer and/or company

  • Assessments - These are great to gauge understanding of a topic. You can create simple few questions prior to the training and feel free to review as part of the training.

  • Post survey on training effectiveness

Additionally, make sure there is a chance for employees to easily pose questions and give feedback.

Times are challenging but this is a good time to think outside the box and try some hybrid trainings or virtual options. Draw from your staff and keep contact during these times. You just may find some things that can improve your training programs for the future. Always feel free to contact your BWC safety staff for additional information.
