1 in 5 Americans has a mental illness and many are reluctant to seek help or might not know where to turn for care. The symptoms of mental illness can be difficult to detect — even when friends and family of someone who appears to be developing mental illness can tell that something is amiss, they may not know how to intervene or direct the person to proper treatment – which means that all too often, those in need of mental health services do not get them until it is too late. As a society, we largely remain ignorant about the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and we ignore our role as responsible community members to help people experiencing these illnesses.

This presentation will discuss:

  • How to identify signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders
  • How to respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders
  • Resources and additional training available to employers

Kemp A. Boyd, was previously employed by Pastoral Counseling Service of Summit County, a mental health treatment organization in Akron. In 2013, he was promoted to Director of Outpatient Services of PCS and he led the charge to develop and oversee operations of the Vassel Comprehensive Care Center, PCS’ outpatient mental health clinic. Kemp earned his B.S. from the University of Akron in 2004 and a Masters of Organizational Management with a concentration in Business Leadership from Ashford University in 2010.

With over a decade of leadership experience in the cultivation and motivation of staff and clients, Kemp empowers those around him to reach their full potential, including the young men at Kenmore-Garfield High School where he serves as head football coach.

Kemp and his wife Stacy reside in the Kenmore community in west Akron. Their family consists of six beautiful children: Virginia (13), Asa and Ashlynn (10), Majer (6) and Umari and Matthias (2).

Cari's Safety Corner
Q : Does OSHA accept online safety training for compliance required topics?

A : According to a recent OSHA Letter of Interpretation dated July 11, 2019, YES, but it must be accompanied by the opportunity for workers to be able to ask questions of, and receive responses from, a qualified trainer(s), in a timely manner. OSHA notes that one way for the employer to give workers this opportunity in the context of a computer-based program is to provide a telephone hotline so that workers will have direct access to a qualified trainer during the conduct of the online training. The letter goes on to specify online, self-paced computer-based training can be a valuable part of an effective safety and health training program. However, the use of online training by itself would not be sufficient to satisfy OSHA training requirements unless that training contains interactive and hands-on components. Online training that does not provide workers with hands-on training would not comply with OSHA's worker training requirements. Hands-on training is required because it allows an employee to interact with equipment and tools in the presence of a qualified trainer(s), allows the employee to learn or refresh their skills through experience, and allows the trainer to assess whether the trainees have mastered the proper techniques.
