A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

“For me, the opposite of scarcity is not abundance. It is enough. I’m enough. My kids are enough.” Brene Brown

We have been blessed with abundance this past month at IVYP and I am so grateful. We hosted our inaugural LEAP awards event, honoring Jon Clark and Dr. Liz Barnitz, two individuals who have embodied our values of Learning, Engaging, Advocating and Partnering – helping us LEAP into the future. We received a grant from the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara, which will help our Family Resource Center to grow. I see abundance in the support of our community and the strength of our history.

Yet, in this abundance, we continue to struggle with scarcity. We are in the midst of a transition in our Children’s Center and so we are looking for a program director as well as teachers. Ensuring that we have enough staffing at our sites is a challenge that often leaves our staff feeling stretched. I am choosing to approach all of this with gratitude. Of course, I am extremely grateful for the gifts we have received from our donors and funders. But, I’m also grateful for the opportunity to re-envision our children’s center. Together, we are working to make our environment more welcoming, more enriching and more engaging.

I invite you to join us as we grow into the abundance of opportunities coming our way.

IVYP in the News! LEAP 2019

On April 30th 122 members of the community gathered together to honor Dr. Liz Barnitz and Jon Clark at IVYP's inaugural LEAP Awards Luncheon. The event raised over $25,000 to support IVYP programming across the Goleta Valley. Thank you again to our sponsors, donors, attendees, staff, and volunteers for your support and belief in our work.

FRC Celebrates Mother's Day

The Isla Vista Community Room filled to capacity to celebrate Dia de las Madres! IVYP's Family Resource Center offered this free and family friendly event to the community for the second year. There was a mariachi, catered dinner, games, and photo booth. The moms who attended said they felt celebrated and special. Plans for next year have already begun and may even include a dance party!

Staff Spotlight - Elsie German

"I love that I am able to provide opportunities for the kids to have that aha moment. When a child first understands a new concept and sees how the lesson applies directly to their lives. Helping children discover their strengths and then develop those strengths into regular habits is extremely rewarding for me. Knowing that I have helped precious little children move forward with skills they will use for the rest of their lives is gratifying and truly fulfilling for my soul. "

Women's Fund Invests in IVYP

On May 1 IVYP was honored alongside 8 other local nonprofits with a grant from the Women's Fund of Santa Barbara. A volunteer-led, collective donor group with nearly 1,000 members, the Women’s Fund combines its members’ donations into large grants focused on the needs of women, children and families in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria. This support will provide our FRC with an additional Family Advocate to continue to deepen our work within GUSD.

Harvest of the month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our monthly food distribution on the first Thursday of every month. This month we are highlighting strawberries. This recipe is a unique and delicious twist on the classic tamale that utilizes this seasons sweet treat - strawberries! This is also a great recipe to make with your little ones who love to be a part of the cooking process.
