Getting to Zero - Animal Welfare Strategy
In his easy to read book, Getting to Zero, Peter Marsh provides life-saving information on the programs needed to end shelter overpopulation and the euthanasia of unwanted animals.
Marsh states "the truth cannot be changed until it can be seen." His point is that people must understand the stories of the animals that cannot be saved due to limited resources. Limited resources frequently cause shelters to reach capacity, and then what?
SNSI and many of our shelter and rescue partners recognize spay-neuter as the first order of defense to stop the cycle of unwanted litters. Peter Marsh has gathered information through extensive research to help rescue groups and shelters get to zero-kill, and he makes the information available free of charge.
Peter Marsh's home state of New Hampshire is now a zero-kill state. As a result, New Hampshire shelters are able to accept dogs transported to them by Indiana's CanINE Express Transport Project.
Now is Indiana's time to become a zero-kill state. SNSI and many Indiana shelters and rescue groups are following the same proven path, paved by Peter Marsh. We're seeing results, but we know we can do more and that time is of the essence.

Indy Nears No Kill Status
The City of Indianapolis reports an impressive 86.4% live release rate for the first six months of 2016, with the live release rate for cats being 92% during that time period. Compare this to just six years ago, when Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) had a live release rate of only 47%.
"Much has changed, and no-kill has become the ever present goal at IACS. Through adoption specials, the availability of low-cost spay/neuter, and numerous rescue partners who pull dogs and cats on a daily basis, the dedicated staff can focus on a commitment to save lives," said Jason Larrison, speaking for the City. "And with the addition of a veterinarian and a medical staff of three registered vet techs to assist, IACS is able to assess and treat more sick and injured animals than ever before. Credit also should go to Indianapolis citizens who choose to "adopt, not shop" and look first at IACS for a family pet."
Like any shelter that reaches 90% or higher live release rate, a no-kill status cannot happen without the help of current and future pet owners. It is important that pets are being spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. These three steps can greatly impact the live release rate of Indy's open-admission municipal shelter that accepts approximately 14,000 stray, found, owner-surrender, sick and senior dogs and cats annually.

 October "Treat Your Tails" Campaign
It's almost that time of year again, when SNSI partners with vets to provide low-cost spay and neuter surgeries through its Treat Your Tails campaign. Throughout October, participating vets offer surgeries at prices ranging from $35 to $75. If you have a family member, neighbor, co-worker or friend who has been struggling to get their dog or cat fixed, please share this important information with them. Treat Your Tails certificates and the list of vets will be posted on our website later this month.
