Town of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland & Labrador
Winner
5 Blooms - Bronze
The Reconstruction of the Three Sisters' Steps
PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VICTORIA, British Columbia, October 22nd, 2022 —
The Town of Bay Roberts is the winner in the 6,001-20,000 Population category. They received a rating of 5 Blooms - Bronze and a special mention for The Reconstruction of the Three Sisters' Steps during the 2022 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Victoria, British Columbia. The Town of Bay Roberts was in competition with Portage la Prairie MB and Taber AB.
Over the summer, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments; industry; businesses and the private sector – including volunteer efforts – regarding the following criteria: Community Appearance, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Tree Management, Landscape and Plant & Floral Displays.
Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Colleen Stockford and Lucy Chang wrote:
“Bay Roberts has a popular tourist destination of rock and beach formation called the Three Sisters. Overtime, due to erosion, and the stairs down to the beach becoming damaged, accessibility to the beach was an issue. A project got underway to save the popular look out area. With funding support from the provincial government, the affected area was excavated and stabilized with infill rocks, and a brand-new set of stairs, that can be removed for winter storage, installed. The successful reconstruction means that visitors and locals alike can access the beach safely and take in the beauty that the Three Sisters and the ocean background have to offer.”
All those involved in the Communities in Bloom program can be proud of their efforts, benefitting all of society by providing real and meaningful ways to mitigate climate change
