The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

This issue of the newsletter focuses on spiritual connection and health.  We offer are our own observations and the observations of others concerning the remarkable effect of spiritual connection on our physical well-being.

It is no secret to many of our readers that Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel are long-time disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda and are closely associated with  Ananda  and the path of self-realization. Spiritual focus is not something we do only on Sundays, it is a practice we strive to maintain in every waking moment, in every interaction with everyone with whom we come into contact. Some days are better than others. It is easy to forget that our true nature is spiritual when we are lost in the human experience.

Why spend any time at all on spiritual health?  Although much research has been done about the mind/body connection, the mind aspect of the connection is given cursory attention in the Western medical paradigm. Evaluation of the spirit level of being, the causative schematic for human existence, is totally absent. Many health care providers not only have zero understanding of the effects of spirit on health, they have no tools or skills in evaluation. Even "holistic" naturopathic medical training, although strong in the mind/body connection, leaves spirit out of the health equation.

In this issue of the newsletter, Dr. Connie leads with her musings on the relationship between spirit and body, and offers suggestions on integrating the two; Dr. Marcel offers his thoughts on the connections between the three levels of being and thoughts on how to open the door to spirit; Dr. Connie follows with her thoughts on connecting with spirit while dealing with the limitations of being in a physical body; Dr. Marcel offers guidelines for assessing spiritual health; Jane H.writes about the mind/body/spirit connections and how hypnotherapy can help integrate the levels; and Lauren H-W. offers a recipe for making your own face and body cream..

News from the  Hernandez Center  includes articles on how colon cancer patients can improve their survival rates, the anti-cancer power of breast milk, and an enlightening video transcript about the "war on natural treatments for cancer."

For the past several years Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel have subscribed to a weekly box full of beautiful, super fresh, organic vegetables provided by Ananda Valley Farm.  There are still a few subscriptions available and we unreservedly recommend that our readers check it out.

MUSINGS ON BODY AND SPIRIT

The intention in naturopathic medicine is to acknowledge, respect  and address the many aspects of life that contribute to health and well being. Among these are physical, mental, emotional, social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual realities. Most often, though, naturopathic healers loosely refer to healing of body, mind and spirit.

For several reasons, I find the phrasing curious. Naturopathic doctors adhere to the tenet that, in contrast to the predominant mode in conventional medicine, we endeavor to seek the cause of an illness, rather than simply treating an effect. Yet, the reality of the demands inherent in operating physical bodies in a physical world inevitably draws attention to the physical aspect of the equation, and mind and spirit become secondary.

Perhaps if we reversed the equation, and spoke of healing of spirit, mind and body, causation and prioritization would be more clear to us. Even then, the phrasing is odd, as indwelling spirit, by its very nature, carries the absolute attributes of the divine. (The spiritual master Yogananda characterizes these as love, joy, peace, calmness, wisdom, power, sound and light.) How is it that we speak of healing spirit?  Only if we speak of the lesser definition of spirit as the attitudes and enthusiasm or lack thereof of a particular person might we think of healing their spirit.

It would be more apt to speak of unleashing the restrictions of body and mind to allow spirit free reign over and through them.   This is, in fact, the teaching in naturopathy, though naturopathy uses the Vix Medicatrix Naturae (healing force of nature) terminology.

Spirit, after all, is the ultimate causative force. We live in a world of energy. Whether you call it Vix Medicatrix Naturae or cosmic conscious energy, or whether you name the source of that energy as Heavenly Father or Divine Mother or any other appellation, spirit is that energy which animates and patterns all of physical existence.  A Kirlian photograph of a bud will reveal the energetic pattern that that bud is to become. Cut a piece off the leaf, and the energetic pattern remains. Disappear the physical body entirely, and spirit as the soul of the person, remains.

Yogananda offered a series of exercises, which he called the ENERGIZATION EXERCISES which teach a person to use breath, concentration and will to draw conscious cosmic energy into the body, and to direct it through various body parts, while tensing, relaxing, and feeling those body parts.  By so doing, this enlightened master tells us we might heal all aspects of our being.

I can personally attest to the efficacy of these exercises in aligning my spine, relieving me of various bodily discomforts, restoring my energy, calming my mind, and touching me in with the spiritual aspects of my being.  One might find similar benefits in other breath/movement techniques such as meditative yoga, tai chi and chi kung. Concentration on manipulation of the physical world alone will never ever get you there!

The Spiritual Level: Where True Healing Occurs

As naturopathic doctors, our approach to working with our patients acknowledges that if true healing is to occur, imbalances on three levels -- body, mind and spirit - need to be addressed.  For each health challenge that our patients present to us, we try to determine where the center of gravity lies.  This is the creative part of our work as our experience, personal understandings and insights allow us determine if the health challenge is predominantly mental/emotional (M/E), physical or spiritual.  Every health challenge is a combination of these three levels with varying percentages.

For example: if a person presents with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a one-dimensional perspective might diagnose the condition as purely physical and prescribe medication to control the symptoms.  This perspective might suggest over 90 percent physical center of gravity with very little acknowledgement to the other levels.  Our naturopathic approach looks IBS as a symptom of something else going on, not a primary pathology.

On the mental/emotional level, we know that IBS is aggravated by stress, so we examine the patient's job, home life, contentment, relationships and other factors.  Is depression a part of the picture?  In this scenario, a larger percentage is allotted to the M/E level.

On the physical level, we take a complete history of the condition and look at the lifestyle, dietary, exercise, sleep and rest patterns. And yes, we offer therapies to relieve the symptoms.

The spiritual level is often neglected as a causative factor in chronic illness as most health care providers do not know how to evaluate it.  Naomi Remen, MD, offers powerful inspirational advice to doctors: "Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak. When you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of the soul."

Quite simply, the journey with chronic illness is much easier when a person has an orientation to a power greater than him/herself.  This is beyond merely believing in God.  This is about tangible connection.  Carl Jung, when asked if he believed in God, replied something like, "Believe? I don't believe.  I know."

Patients with chronic illnesses who "know" have several characteristics in common.  The have much less anxiety about their condition.  They are more compliant with healing protocols.  They maintain an attitude of surrender to God's will while actively participating in their cure.   They are concerned with their condition, but they are less agitated and more at peace than patients who lack this connection.  Studies by the National Institutes of Health have also shown that outcomes are better in people who have an active, every day spirituality with growing consciousness of their relationship with a higher power.

Establishing an upward connection is a process energized by will and focus.

At a time in my life when I had lost my spiritual way and the path was non-existent, and when I was at the height of my self-indulgent, introspective misery and could not find a way out of the trap in my mind, two friends taught me powerful lessons.  Here are the stories.

The late Ken Carey, author of the "Starseed Transmissions" and "Return of the Bird Tribes," and I were chatting about upward connection - something that was not my experience at the time.  He said, "the loneliest I have ever felt is when I did not experience my connection with God."  Lightbulbs and the Hallelujah chorus went off in my head.  Was that what was the matter with me?    Could the source of my pain and spiritual loneliness be that I did not feel any upward connection whatsoever?  Since that lesson, whenever I experience a bug (like sadness) in my system, I check my connection.

Another time, my dear friend Joseph and I were talking about how we might experience the presence of God and allow Spirit into our lives.  I remarked that if I did so, it wouldn't be real, that I would be pretending.  "By all means, pretend!" my friend said.  Once again, the light bulb illuminated in 5000 watts.  My denial was the REAL pretense.  What is true is that when the inner door is even opened a crack, the light comes streaming through.

If you have difficulty attuning to the spiritual path, don't put it off for another moment.  Seek help, now. Being among great souls who actively, in every moment, seek connection with God makes the journey easier, more joyful and less lonely.

Tuning In To Spirit

Our physical bodies are ever changing. From infancy, we evolve to be toddlers, teens, young, and then mature adults. Velveteen Rabbits that we are, when we believe ourselves to be our bodies, and cling to our physical form in its prime, we set ourselves up for a rude and insidious awakening.  For as surely as we evolve, we then devolve as body parts wear out and our physical bodies weaken. We move in and out of sickness and health. Identification with these temporary states of being leads to disillusion and despair.

Spirit is an absolute and eternal reality. If you know yourself to be a spiritual being inhabiting a physical body, bodily changes become akin to costume changes in a drama which unfolds over this and many lifetimes. Oriented in spirit, you might maintain a certain wry curiosity re your physical body. Physical bodies are the vehicles through which we beings of energy interact with the world of matter, directing energy to manifest form.  We receive lessons in consciousness as we resist, accept, or ultimately become grateful for the growth opportunity that disease and aging provide.

We are inspired when we allow spirit to flow through us.

Our cancer patients, facing an ultimate challenge and propelled by adversity, turn to and deepen in spirit. In so doing, they almost always find profound healing, experience life more fully and embrace the unwelcome gift they have been given.

When those seeking to heal (whether doctor, family, or friend) and those seeking to be healed relate to each other as spiritual beings, as rays of one brilliant sun, there is recognition, compassion, connection. A pathway to healing opens.

My "musings" article above mention 8 attributes of God. Each attribute has a unique vibrational signature, as does every state of being, every feeling, every thought, every form. To the degree to which we attune to these attributes, or to a teaching or a teacher who embodies the vibrations of these attributes, we begin to experience them for ourselves. Our vibration resonates with higher vibrational frequencies, and we are changed.

Years ago, in the Physician Heal Thyself Course in Naturopathic Medical School, we were asked how it is that healing happens. My answer was that healing happens through love and through light. I would add now that immersion in any attribute of God (spirit, if you prefer) can precipitate transformation and deep healing, and give meaning to an otherwise troubling existence.

Living in this world as we do, we are bound by the laws of physical reality.  Many matter bound modalities and medicines facilitate healing of our physical bodies. But it is the connection to spirit that is transformational and that provides the deepest of healing. For we are not merely physical beings, we are energy beings born of spirit and nourished in the light.

How to Evaluate Spiritual Health:
A Guide for Patients and Health Care Providers

Marcel Hernandez, ND

Evaluating a patient's spiritual health is not a course taught in any medical school.  Below are some considerations that might be helpful in determining your patient's spiritual well-being, as well as your own:

* Search. Spend time exploring faith and spirituality, considering what seems valid and meaningful.

* Quiet time. Pursue greater intimacy with God though reflection, prayer and/or meditation.

* Gather with others in devotion. Attend services in a community of like-minded people.

* Learn. Study books, recordings, films and other avenues seeking guidance and inspiration.

* Love. Focus on being a loving person for yourself and others.

* Seek guidance.  Find a spiritual guide to help nurture faith, provide explanations and serve as a role model.

* Service.  Make time in your schedule for service to others.

* Attune. Learn that deepening in spiritual understanding provides insights into your true nature and guidance on leading a more meaningful life.

* World view. Develop an optimistic, positive view of the world and all creation.

* Walk your talk. Align your actions, choices and lifestyle to match your spiritual understandings and values.

* Integrate.  Come to your own understandings and insights about your spirituality, rather than just blindly accepting the beliefs of others.

* Practice.  Spend time in personal reflection and devotion with gratefulness and reverence.

In this section of our newsletter, we will describe unique health care products we offer in the new, small retail section of our clinic.

POMEGRANATE SEED OIL

Produced and bottled locally, this oil is being researched by various labs and government agencies. Pomegranate seed oil is an excellent source of conjugated alpha-linoleic acid.

The NIH states, " The phytochemistry and pharmacological actions of all Punica granatum components suggest a wide range of clinical applications for the treatment and prevention of cancer, as well as other diseases where chronic inflammation is believed to play an essential etiologic role."

Emerging evidence suggests that the oil is also useful in treating cardiovascular disease, diabetes, ED, antibiotic resistance, radiation induced skin damage, Alzheimer's and arthritis.

(Dr. Marcel squirts a druopperful of the oil into his mouth in the morning with breakfast and another in the evening with dinner.)

Intravenous Alpha-lipoic Acid

What is ALA?

Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that is made by the body and is found in every cell, where it helps turn glucose into energy.

Antioxidants are substances that attack "free radicals," waste products created when the body turns food into energy. Free radicals cause harmful chemical reactions that can damage cells in the body, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. They also damage organs and tissues.

Unlike other antioxidants, which work only in water (such as vitamin C) or fatty tissues (such as vitamin E), alpha-lipoic acid is both fat- and water-soluble. That means it can work throughout the body. In addition, antioxidants are depleted as they attack free radicals, but evidence suggests alpha-lipoic acid may help regenerate these other antioxidants and make them active again.

ALA is found naturally occurring in certain foods such as red meat, spinach, broccoli, yam, carrot, beets, potato and yeast. As a supplement, ALA can be taken orally, or administered intravenously in doses up to 600mg at a time.

Orally, ALA is used for diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, cardiac autonomic neuropathy, retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma. Alpha-lipoic acid is also used orally for dementia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), HIV/AIDS, cancer, liver disease, Wilson's disease, cardiovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), intermittent claudication, Lyme disease, and lactic acidosis caused by inborn errors of metabolism.

Cancer & Pre Cancerous Conditions

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the development of cancer. Although investigation of ALA for its role in the treatment and prevention of cancer is mainly limited to preclinical studies, there are a few randomized and non-randomized trials and case studies that support the use of ALA in combination with other therapies for cancer.

A small case-control study in 2010 found ALA in combination with conventional therapy was effective in managing the oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), a chronic irreversible condition of the mouth with proven malignant (cancerous) potential. The ALA group exhibited better relief of symptoms such as burning sensation of the mucosa and mouth opening and demonstrated greater reversal of higher clinical stages to lower ones, as compared to the control group.

Besides its antioxidant activity impacting the transformation of healthy cells to cancer cells, ALA was recently demonstrated to induce apoptosis (cancer cell death) in lung cancer cells. It is believed the mechanism of apoptosis induction is via activation of capsases - enzymes that induce cell apoptosis. ALA has also been shown to prevent degradation of a tumor suppressor gene in colon cancer cells.

Furthermore, ALA is cofactor of pyruvate dehydrogenase, an enzyme that converts pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, which reduces the formation of lactate. Lactate is produced from glucose in excessive amounts by cancer cells, as a result of altered cell metabolism (a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect). ALA reduces the amount of lactate produced by cancer cells, slowing their growth rate. In this way, ALA is synergistic with  DCA (dichloroacetate) in its ability to alter cancer cell metabolism.

Another anti-cancer mechanism of ALA is its ability to inhibit a signaling pathway responsible for cell growth and insulin secretion, known as the mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) pathway ( 21). mTOR inhibitors (such as Afinitor or everolimus) are presently used in the treatment of certain cancers, to reduce cancer growth. Thus, ALA is considered a natural mTOR inhibitor.

There are several published case reports documenting improved symptoms and survival time following treatment with ALA with or without low-dose naltrexone (LDN)

Neurological Disease

Due to its lipophilic (fat soluble) nature, ALA can enter cells and cross the blood-brain barrier to treat neurological conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease or multiple sclerosis and possibly aid in the treatment of malignancies (cancer) in neurological tissue such as gliomas, malignant nerve sheath tumors and other cancers . Recently, animal studies demonstrate promise in ALA's ability to promote functional recovery after stroke . ALA (IV and oral) is a frequent component of integrative cancer protocols, as well as treatment protocols for diseases such as MS and dementia, Alzheimer's disease and to aid recovery from traumatic and ischemic brain injury such as concussion and stroke.

Enzyme Co-factor

ALA is required for healthy cell metabolism - specifically in the mitochondria (aka the "power house") of our cells - thereby playing a critical role in energy production to fuel other activities in the body

Diabetes

Alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar levels, and its ability to kill free radicals may help reduce pain, burning, itching, tingling, and numbness in people who have nerve damage caused by diabetes (called peripheral neuropathy). Alpha-lipoic acid has been used for years for this purpose in Europe, and at least one study found that intravenous (IV) doses of alpha-lipoic acid helped reduce symptoms.

Liver Disease

Alpha-lipoic acid has been proposed as a treatment for alcohol-related liver disease, but so far there is no evidence that it works. Alpha-lipoic acid has been administered by IV along with silymarin to treat people who have eaten the poisonous mushroom Amanita, which causes liver damage.

Brain Function and Stroke

Because alpha-lipoic acid can pass easily into the brain, it has protective effects on brain and nerve tissue. Scientists are investigating it as a potential treatment for stroke and other brain disorders involving free radical damage. Animals treated with alpha-lipoic acid, for example, suffered less brain damage and had a four times greater survival rate after a stroke than animals who did not receive this supplement. More research is needed to understand whether this benefit applies to people as well.

Neuropathy

High doses of alpha-lipoic acid are approved in Germany for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

Safety

It is important to know that many well-designed studies and recent meta-analyses have demonstrated greater efficacy with intravenous ALA compared to oral ALA. Therefore, outcomes with ALA are dependent on several factors, especially the route of administration.

So, What Is the Mind-Body Connection?
And How Does Spirit Fit Into This?

Jane 2013

In spite of 200 years and a lot of research there is still a mystery about hypnosis and just how it works.  What we do understand is that hypnosis has been a very successful technique to help heal the mind, body and spiritual aspects of life.

We all have a mind and a body, and they are inseparable. Thus, the description has evolved into a joint word, mind-body.  The mind and body are constantly communicating through your thoughts, emotions, ideas, images and other information sharing. All these modes of communication are translated into chemicals, which are sent throughout the body all the way down to the cellular level.  In effect, you have no secrets from your body.

Many of us hold these emotions inside the body, which is what some of us were taught to do as children.  When this holding-in of powerful emotions has become a lifelong pattern, it can certainly lead to disease and chronic pain or illness.

When a client is in a hypnotherapy session, they have much more direct access to their emotions because they are in the subconscious mind.  The client in hypnosis is much more aware of their body and the emotional feelings that are there. By directing the subconscious mind to focus energy on a specific system in the body, more of your natural resources will go there. This release of emotions is like loosening the valve of a pressure cooker. Then the steam can be released slowly without exploding. This is how  hypnotherapy helps heals the mind and the body, through the information revealed, expressed and released from the client's energy field helping to quicken the healing process.

The body is designed to heal itself and it works automatically. But it can be accelerated and enhanced by hypnotic techniques.

While emphasizing mind-body is inseparable it's vital to understand that, the major player in what we truly are, is Spirit. It is Spirit that is the essence of life energy which vitalizes the mind-body duet to become the mind-body-spirit trio. Remove the life energy from any living thing, and what you are left with is lifeless matter.

Hypnosis is an integrative process that unifies the mind and body and leads you to the spirit.  It can help you reach your Higher Self, the place of your deepest wisdom, intuition, peace, and calm. It is an understanding that you are not alone and a guide to help you in critical situations.

Anchoring the wisdom of the Higher Self onto your physical self is very much a part of our human spiritual evolution and part of our purpose.

We have the ability to be more than just the physical matter of body. We are Spirit. We are an energy.  And Mind, Body, and Spirit work together in our experience of health, well-being and the eternal understanding of being much more than our bodies.

Yields: 2-3 jars(4oz), for 1 jar cut recipe in half

Ingredients:

Gently warm first 3 ingredients in a pot over low heat.
* 7oz. cups cold-pressed oil(avocado, extra virgin olive, grapeseed, coconut), all nourishing
* 2 1/2 TBSP. Beeswax
* 1 1/2 TBSP. Cocoa Butter or coconut butter or shea butter

In a small bowl, mix next 3 ingredients together:
* 1 TBSP. Vegetable Glycerin
* 7oz Aloe Vera gel (buy 99% aloe)

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- the safety of breast thermography -

thermography

When we speak of the difference between breast thermography exams and mammograms, we speak of thermographic information reflecting physiologic change, whereas mammograms reflect anatomic change.

Physiology precedes anatomy.

In order for a structural change to manifest and appear on a mammogram, there must be an underlying physiologic change. Thermograms look at temperatural differentials. Heat in one breast not present in the other represents an upregulated metabolism in the one breast, representing a physiologic difference with the other breast. Appearance of neovascularization indicates new blood vessels being called upon to deliver supplies to a developing location.  These changes can occur in inflammation, in lymphatic congestion, in tumor development.

By attending to both physiologic and anatomic changes, we become far more accurate in evaluating breast health.

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

Colon Cancer Survivors Live Longer
With Healthy Habits

by Maggie Fox

There's a straightforward way to live longer after being diagnosed with advanced cancer and it doesn't involve chemotherapy or surgery. It's just eating right and exercising more, doctors reported last month.

Cancer survivors who followed standard  American Cancer Society guidelines for healthy living were 42 percent less likely to die than similar survivors who didn't, researchers found.

"We found that patients who maintain a healthy body weight, engage in regular physical activity, and eat a diet rich in vegetables and whole grains and low in red meats and processed meats did better and survived longer than those who didn't," said Dr. Erin Van Blarigan of the University of California, San Francisco, who led the study.

"I think the magnitude of the benefit was surprising," Van Blarigan told NBC News.

For Colon Cancer Survivors, Following Simple Steps Can Be Life-Changing.
"Everyone seems to know that these behaviors are healthy and that people who do these things are going to live longer but I don't think anyone really appreciates how much better they might actually do."

The research is being featured at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology that starts next month in Chicago. And while the researchers studied colon cancer patients, they say their findings are likely to apply to many types of cancer survivors.
It may sound simple, but it's obviously not easy for cancer patients, Van Blarigan said.
"Only 10 percent of the patients in our study were actually doing it," she said. "So there is definitely a need for more resources and support to help patients adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles after they've been diagnosed with cancer."

For the study, Van Blarigan and colleagues followed 992 stage 3 colon cancer patients starting two months after they got surgery. They asked them about diet, weight and exercise and followed them for seven years.

Over that time, colon cancer came back in 335 of the people and 256 of them died.
They scored the volunteers for healthy behaviors:  Eating at least 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables a day, eating whole grains instead of white flour and rice, keeping a healthy body weight, exercising at least half an hour a day - preferably an hour - and drinking moderately.

They found a clear, linear trend. The more people followed these guidelines, the less likely they were to have their cancer come back and the less likely they were to die.

"The people who were adhering to the guidelines in our seven-year follow-up period, 20 percent died," Van Blarigan said. "But in the group where people were not adhering to the guidelines, 35 percent died."
ASCO president Dr. Daniel Hayes said because people were watched in real time, it takes out mistakes that can happen when people are asked to look back on past behaviors.

"It makes these findings even more compelling, in my opinion," he told reporters.
There was another surprise in the study. Dr. Temidayo Fadelu of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and colleagues looked specifically at whether the colon cancer patients ate nuts.
"We observed that nut consumption was associated with disease-free survival and overall survival," Fadelu told reporters.

Hardly any patients managed it, but those who did manage to eat at least two servings a week of tree nuts were also 42 percent less likely to die in the seven years, Fadelu and colleagues found. Peanuts, which are legumes, did not affect people's survival.

"We don't really know what the underlying biologic mechanism is for this association," Fadelu said.
With all the healthful behaviors, it could be that the body is responding better to insulin, the researchers said. The healthier eating and exercise may also lower overall inflammation in the body, which is linked to cancer risk, or it could alter the balance of the microbiome - the collection of microbes in the body.
"There are more than one million colorectal cancer survivors in the United States," said Van Blarigan. "These individuals are living longer than ever before, but the disease remains the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S."

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Americans, according to the American Cancer Society. Colon cancer will be diagnosed in more than 95,000 people this year and nearly 40,000 will be diagnosed with rectal cancer. The two cancers will kill more than 50,000 people this year.

Could Breast Milk Be
 the Next Cancer Treatment?

by Marie Claire Dorking
The health benefits of breast milk have long been touted, but experts are now testing whether a compound found in mother's milk could help treat cancer.

The accidental discovery of the effects of a breast milk compound, nicknamed "Hamlet" by scientists, could mean a more effective and targeted way to kill cancerous tumor cells.

Researchers from the University of Lunt in Sweden have revealed some positive results after studying the effects Hamlet has on bladder cancer patients. In the early trials, those injected with the compound began to shed dead tumor cells through their urine within days.

"There's something magical about Hamlet's ability to target tumor cells and kill them," Dr. Catharina Svanborg told the Daily Mail.

But the discovery came completely by accident while the team was researching antibiotics.

"We were looking for novel antimicrobial agents, and new breast milk is a very good source of these," Svanborg continued. "During one experiment we needed human cells and bacteria to be present, and we chose human tumor cells for practical reasons."

"To our amazement," she added, "when we added this compound of milk, the tumor cells died. It was a totally serendipitous discovery. "Researchers believe that a reaction takes place with breast milk when it hits the gut. It produces a protein called alpha-lactalbumin, which targets cancer cells.

The breast milk compound targets cancer cells alone, offering an alternative to chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, which can damage both healthy and cancerous cells in the body.

The scientists hope the breast milk compound could also help bowel and cervical cancer patients. A trial of the Hamlet substance against a placebo is currently being planned to test the promising benefits of the compound.

The War Against Natural Treatments for Cancer

by TY BOLLINGER

Ty Bollinger:  Yeah, that's with our group, The Truth About Cancer, that's our goal, to educate. Which, I appreciate everything that you've shared today, because it's very educational. It's to eradicate cancer, which, I think that using approaches like this, that's possible. But it's also to expose. That's the three Es.

And so we want to expose this beast, and it really seems to me that the real war is actually being fought against people that are offering natural treatments for cancer. I don't think there's a war against cancer, I think it's  a war against natural treatments.

Dr. Rath: It's very true. And there's a reason for that. We talked about concentration camps. They are surrounded by a fence. If someone tries to escape the fences of the modern concentration camp, the ones that confine the cancer patient within the parameter of conventional thinking, of chemotherapy thinking, they are being haunted.

How many court cases have been filed around the world for withdrawing custody of parents who went into natural health as opposed to staying within the confines, within the fences, of  conventional chemotherapy treatments? It's nothing else. The dimension of a child dying in a concentration camp, or dying from leukemia, that is being intoxicated by chemotherapy, as opposed to choosing natural paths, are the same.

The parents are losing a child. The family is losing their future. And that's the deeper dimension of what you're talking about, that the same interest groups that have proven again and again in the past, namely the pharmaceutical investment business, how ruthless they are, are still around trying to fool us, trying to tell us, "Well, believe us."

Why should we? If we don't have the courage to liberate ourselves, then we will not make progress. And this is why this is important, this series that you are doing, Ty. It's being kept alive, and I just can encourage everyone who's seeing this show, that you spread it and help Ty to get his message around the world, and not only tame this beast, but eliminate it. Not by violence, but by education, by becoming aware about the three Es that you mentioned.

Dr. Niedzwiecki: Yeah. We need to recognize that fear is being used in controlling patients, in controlling society. Fear is a very powerful weapon, and  fear of canceris being used in manipulating people. And so by educating, by bringing this knowledge to people, explaining both the basis of the problem, but also showing about possibility of new solutions to it, this fear is being alleviated.

Dr. Rath: Elaborating on that, Alex, among all diseases, the one disease that the status  quo,  meaning the pharmaceutical investment, needs most to continue its business, to stabilize, to cement its system, is cancer. They can afford to allow, let's say, advances in osteoporosis, that decrease the number of bone fractures, without major damage to its future existence.

They can allow progress in this and that disease to kind of mask their principle business. But they cannot allow, they cannot allow cancer to disappear, being identified as a disease that can be regulated or prevented. So long ago, they have initiated what Dr. Niedzwiecki mentioned, the fact of fear.

In fact, it's more than that. It's a psychological warfare on humanity that the pharmaceutical industry is leading with the tool cancer. Keeping cancer as a death verdict is the platform, is a precondition for this entire investment industry to continue.

Ty Bollinger: Wow.

Dr. Niedzwiecki: It's strong, yeah?

Ty Bollinger: It is.

Dr. Niedzwiecki: Yep.

Ty Bollinger: Really amazing information that you've shared.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.

But intravenous therapy is not just for cancer patients.  More than half of our IV patients come for various "cocktails" to help them ward off infections and optimize their health.  We offer a number of individualized versions of the famous "Myers Cocktail." Read about the Myers Cocktail HERE

Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
