TOP STORY: Vaping and E-Cigarette Bylaw goes to Council
The Heart and Stroke Foundation have found substantial evidence that vape and e-cigarettes:

  1. Causes short-term adverse health effects in several organ systems, especially in teens and young adults
  2. Are products that contain and emit numerous potentially toxic substances
  3. Can explode, cause burns and/or cause projectile injuries
  4. Have levels of addictive nicotine comparable to cigarettes and tobacco
  5. Using vaping and e-cigarette products results in symptoms of depending on them
Proposal set for February 22nd
Did you know that vape and e-cigarette stores in Oakville aren't required to have a license? Without having licenses to enforce responsible business practices, multiple stores in town keep getting away with selling vape and e-cigarette products to minors. And it's gone on for too long.

As the Ward 5 Town & Regional Councillor, Councillor Knoll has been advocating for required licensing in all businesses selling e-cigarette and vaping products. A new bylaw is being proposed at the next Oakville town council meeting this coming Monday February 22nd.

Why is mandating licenses for vape and e-cigarette stores a good idea? Requiring a license means stores risk having their business license revoked if they sell their products to underage customers, forcing them to take their products seriously.

Every single conviction report filed from Halton Region against a vape store in the last two years - all of them - have been regarding a store in Oakville (and you can see the reports here.) The leniency in letting these businesses get away with targeting and selling to underage customers needs to stop and it needs to stop now.

The new by-law amendment will protect young adults and teens from the serious health risks and consequences of purchasing products they shouldn't even be using. Retailers selling tobacco are required to obtain a licence to operate - so why shouldn't retailers selling e-cigarette and vape products have to do the same?

This is a critical, necessary change to make sure that all businesses in Oakville selling smoking products are regulated and made to follow rules to keep all residents safe. You can visit the Town website to learn about registering as a delegate at Monday's council meeting.
