The things we do!

You really have to be careful when you decide to make a modification to your motorcycle. Manufacturers spend countless dollars and time testing their bikes to make sure they handle and work well, so you don’t have to worry about things when riding. Making changes can cause your motorcycle to wobble, shake, and not corner well. In some cases, the bike becomes dangerous to ride.

I have done some stupid things on some of my bikes and suffered the consequences. For instance, one time I put a big handlebar mounted fairing and full 3 bag set up on my Honda 750. These items were not designed for that bike, and I had to “make” them fit. It drastically changed the weight and balance of the bike, which resulted in a wobble on the freeway that sent me over the handlebars and crashed my bike.

There is a current trend to put knobby, off-road tires on street bikes for the “look of it.” Bad Idea! They don’t track properly, the tires have less traction on the street, and they likely have never been tested on street bikes to ensure they are safe to use. Tall “ape hanger” handlebars are another risky choice. They do not offer the leverage or ability for you to properly operate your motorcycle. Of course, there are extended forks, i.e., choppers. People add these forks to look cool, but they make your motorcycle handle very poorly and forget about going around corners well.

If you want to change something on your motorcycle, go to the manufacturer of the accessory you want to install and check that it has been designed for the make and model of your bike. Also look at the reviews. Of course, the best fitting and performing accessories are the ones approved by the manufacturer of your bike.

Looking cool on a bike is great as long as it works!
