Tree canopy project
The Tree Canopy Project

Trees are not only beautiful, but they significantly cool the environment and protect us from summer heat. Horticulturist, Anne Wilson, will explain why we need to increase tree canopy in a warming climate. Sally Osterstock, an experienced fruit tree grower, will demonstrate how easy it is to propagate many types of fruit trees for your own garden.
SATURDAY 29 AUGUST, 11AM - 12.30PM
UNLEY TOWN HALL OXFORD TERRACE, UNLEY
Gold coin on entry. Bookings essential, phone 8372 5100 or book online.

My grandparents had a massive almond tree in their backyard in Parkside while I was growing up. We did everything under that tree as kids. We made cubbyhouses and climbed it to heights that don't even make my eye level nowadays. But what I remember about it the most was how it heralded spring. Every year for a very short time, it would shower a carpet of white on the ground that an Adelaidean girl could pretend was the snow she had never seen.

And we are just passing that stage right now. The sun has shifted and both the white and pink blossoms are out. Spring is on our doorstep, despite the biting cold.

If you are interested in trees like I am, horticulturist Anne Wilson and Sally Osterstock, an experienced fruit tree grower, will be visiting the Unley Town Hall in a couple of weeks (see above for details). Hmm, I should probably ask about that almond tree. It was a lovely soft shelled variety that you could crack the almonds out with your fingers and I haven't seen its like since.

If you are looking for something this weekend, the Melbourne Writers' Festival was this week. They are offering some online events featuring a variety of authors this weekend. Check out their website for details.

Next weekend we have the honour of hosting a couple of our SALA artists at Goodwood Library for a meet and greet. Maggie Cecchin has done some wonderful explorations of textures - our website features Maggie in a video interview as part of our SALA Online Gallery. Susi Messenger's fascinating collection of tea cosies are a staff favourite for their creativity and originality.

Also, don't forget to check out all the entries for the Winter Wonderland Master Building Challenge and the Designing Dragons competition!

I hope you are all safe and well and we will see you in the Libraries.
