Hello FLASHERS~

Well, most kids are heading back to school today! Where did the summer go?

Over the next couple of weeks I will be passing along some tips that I hope you and your precious little ones (or bigger ones) will enjoy. I particularly love the video of the week in today's issue. Wi sh I had thought to chronicle my children's childhood years in this way. Make sure you watch it.

On another note...I am sure there are other FLASHERS who woke up yesterday wishing they were a billion and a half richer. Can you even imagine? I unearthed an email my husband sent me years ago that reminded me that there are some things that even a billion and a half dollars can't buy!

ENJOY this little story and take it to heart...

The telephone rang. It was a call from his mother. He answered it and his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday."

Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.

"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.

"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.

"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said.

"He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered.

Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly...

"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

"The box is gone," he said.

"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said.

"I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days," the note read.

Early the next day Jack went to the post office and retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention.

"Mr. Harold Belser" it read.

Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope.

Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filled his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.

Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! -- Harold Belser."

"The thing he valued most was my time!"

Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days.*

"Why?" Janet, his assistant asked.

"I need some time to spend with the people I love and say I care for," he said. "Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!"

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."

Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's most certainly true.

1. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way and you mean the world

to someone.

2. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.

3. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.

4. If not for you, someone may not be living.

5. You are special and unique.

6. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from

it.

7. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a hard look: you

most likely turned your back on the world and the people who love and care for

you.

8. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude

remarks.

9. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when

they know and you'll both be happy.

10. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.

Spend your time wisely FLASHERS...You never get it back and what you do with it can change someone's life!

Meals on Wheels Seeks Volunteer Delivery Drivers

to Feed Hungry Seniors

Senior Resource Association (SRA) which operates Indian River County’s Meals on Wheels program, needs volunteers to drive short, local, weekday delivery routes bringing food to seniors in need.

“On any given day, more than 300 older adults are on the waitlist to receive hot nutritious meals,

milk and fruit delivered to their doors,” states Karen Deigl, President and CEO of Senior

Resource Association.

Thanks to support from generous donors and grant-making organizations like Impact-100, SRA

is able to feed more seniors than ever before but, with so many seasonal residents away for the

summer, more volunteer drivers are needed.

Meals on Wheels routes take less than two hours to complete, between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

Monday through Friday. Volunteers can choose their day and how often they drive. Some deliver

one day a week; some drive only once a month. Still others give multiple days each week.

Deliveries are clustered geographically for convenience. A handy, free smart phone app contains

pertinent delivery info and gives directions from one stop to the next. Hot and cold bags are

provided by SRA to maintain safe food temperatures. Volunteer supplies also include Meals on

Wheels identification, vehicle magnets, and print materials. Background screening is required.

“The need for nutritional support among local seniors is exceptionally high,” notes Deigl, “but

we are fortunate that our supporters recognize the ever-increasing demand and are helping us to

address it. Now, we’re looking for volunteers to help get more meals on the road to the hungry.”

To volunteer for Meals on Wheels, or in another capacity, or to donate to SRA, please call 772-

569-0760 or email info@sramail.org.

This little guy has had quite the run with life. He is a lovable guy that adores his people. New environments and people can be a bit intimidating for a small guy like him, but with the proper introductions and patience, he is sure to warm right up! He does have seizures from time to time, but we are working on regulating them with medication. Tito is available under our Foster to Adopt program - give him a home?

So much to love about our sweet, sweet Snoopy. Obviously, he's quite handsome, but also very affectionate and loving. Snoopy is just looking for a nice lap to warm. He's had a bit of a rough go with cancer but after he underwent surgery, they were able to excise the cancerous cells and he is now cancer free! He is waiting on the tips of his toe beans to live the rest of his, now many, days in a forever home.

Fix Your Closet Space With

Tie Hangers

Everyone could use more space in their closet! The rainy summer afternoons are the perfect time to spruce up and organize your closet before the busy school year starts.

Tie hangers allow you to maximize your space 10x since you can fit 4-24 pieces of clothing onto a single clothing rack hanger. Often hangers are a reason for the lack of space in a closet. This week's project will help you reduce the number of hangers needed; freeing up some much needed space. The additional hooks also allow for an easier way to store multiple accessories such as scarves, ties, belts, etc. Children's clothes are also perfect for this hack!
