Hello FLASHERS~
WELCOME TO OCTOBER!
Don't we all love the month of October when the temperatures get a little cooler...and boy can we look forward to that after record breaking temps all summer! I remember one Halloween as a child in Miami when we had to wear coats over our costumes because it was so chilly. I know Mom was thrilled to have myself and four sisters 'cover up' her clever costume creations! :( Speaking of costumes, we will have some fun costume ideas in next week's issue. So, be sure to check back.
Here in Vero, we recognize the official beginning of 'our season' in October. Our 'snowbird ' friends are returning and our Community Calendar really gets busy! Riverside Theatre begins it's professional plays later this month with the opening of Million Dollar Quartet and tickets are going fast! Don't miss out! To help get you into the Halloween spirit, the Theatre Guild is currently showing Addams Family The Musical. If you have never been to a production at either of our local theatres ... You simply MUST! All you have to do is go once and you will be hooked! Both are literally a gem in our own backyard...get out and enjoy them, FLASHERS!
A New exhibit arrived at the Museum of Art last week and is getting rave reviews. Just 'another' Vero Gem!! There are literally so many organizations that enrich our community. We are so lucky! Another is Youth Sailing Foundation. I remember starting FLASH right along side Youth Sailing when we both launched in 2009. They have grown by leaps and bounds and will be offering free sailing to the public this Saturday at their 'Open House'. Don't miss it! There will be music and food and they can't wait to share their expansion plans with you...which by the way includes adult sailing classes!
Tomorrow night is the Downtown Gallery Stroll. This is another fun reason to get out and about as you stroll through the various downtown galleries enjoying all of our local talent. Then, on Saturday you will want o head to The Mall for the Travel Expo. Travel is up and people are itchin' to explore and travel again; post COVID. International travel is way up and I've included a post below with info on passports. Make sure to check it out if you are planning to travel abroad.
There are so many other interesting 'tid-bits' in today's issue that you won't want to miss; along with detailed information on all events mentioned above. So, grab your cup of coffee and sit and relax as you scroll today's FLASH and plan how to fit so much FUN into your schedule.

Paper Spider Web Craft
Supplies:
Black paper, scissors, pencil
Directions:
- Using a black piece of paper, fold one corner to the opposite edge to form a square.
- Cut off the excess strip of paper.
- Fold the triangle in half two more times.
- Fold the triangle a third time and cut off the excess paper at the open end of the triangle.
- You should be left with a long triangle shape.
- Using a pencil, draw web segments that are in the shape of rectangles that are shorter towards the tip of the triangle paper and get longer towards the base end of the triangle paper.
- Cut out the web segment shapes that you drew.
- Carefully open the triangle paper to reveal your paper spider web.

About Esther: I entered H.A.L.O. as a stray. Not only was I physically in bad shape, but I was also extremely fearful. It was obvious I had been failed by the humans that were supposed to take care of me, but H.A.L.O. entered me into the Fresh Start Program and made it their mission to teach me to love and trust. I’d prefer to be the only pet in your life. Children are too rambunctious for me to feel safe. I also don’t warm up to new people quickly, so a low traffic home is ideal. Little Maxie is sweet and affectionate but on her own terms, of course – she’s a cat. She’s an explorer and loves to check everything out. Maxie is very excited to find a new home. Naturally, she wants to be the only feline Queen of the Castle and is so hoping you have a vacancy. Her expressions are priceless and she keeps us smiling! She has an odd diet quirk – lettuce! Maybe she’s a closet vegetarian! Come meet this pretty little Miss Sassy Pants!

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. passport applications were typically fulfilled within six to eight weeks, or two to three weeks for accelerated service. Since the health crisis, however, the Department of State has struggled to get back down to those times and the marked increase in international travel this year didn’t help matters. Some people have even had to travel out of state to areas with lighter loads so they could get their documents in time for planned trips.
As of this week, though, there’s been a step in the right direction: Regular applications received on and after Monday will have wait times of eight to 11 weeks, and expedited service will take five to seven weeks. That’s a two-week improvement from earlier in 2023, the State Department said in a press release.
Even with the faster wait times, the government recommends beginning the passport application or renewal process six to nine months before any international travel, so let this serve as your reminder to go check the expiration date on your document.

According to a recent Reader's Digest report, only 10% of the population are left-handed, but a surprising number of lawyers are left handed. The report states that left-handed people are right brained, meaning they are more creative, analytical, verbal, and have better language skills. Garfield was President in 1881, the only 'leftie' elected President before 1900. Interesting, huh? My daughter Lilly is left-handed. I don't know that she would be a great President, but she certainly would keep us laughing and the world could use more of that right now

The stroll is based along 14th Avenue from 19th Street to 23rd Street and the surrounding area. I heard about this 92-year-old man. He wasn't feeling up to par, so he went to the doctor.

Unlocking Justice: New Access to Legal Support in Indian River County
Brace yourself for a transformative initiative! The United Way of Indian River County (UW) and the John’s Island Community Service League (JICSL) have partnered with key stakeholders to unveil an innovative collaboration called Access to Justice. This groundbreaking initiative addresses the urgent need for accessible legal services in Indian River County.
From residential disputes to family matters, Access to Justice will change the game. Join us at the Access to Justice Ribbon Cutting at the Indian River County Courthouse on Saturday, November 15 at 12:00 PM. This will be a transformative initiative that will help bridge the gap in access to legal resources and assistance!
Self Help Centers are now open at the Indian River County Courthouse and United Against Poverty (UP). Once these first two centers are well established, the goal is to replicate the legal kiosks and create access points throughout the County to benefit those communities far from the courthouse most impacted by the digital divide.
