Hello FLASHERS~
Welcome to August FLASHERS... Known to be the hottest month of the year. I'd love to tell you that July decided to steal that title this year and that this heat is set to subside ... but that is yet to be seen. The 'Dog Days of Summer' started the first week of July and will continue through August 11th. So...We shall see!
I believe there are two times each year when we can all hit a reset button; January 1st and August. I guess August gives us that opportunity because it ushers in the first day of school. Students start back this year next Thursday, August 10th. Here is a link to the IRC School calendar that you might want to print out.
The start of school was always a time to set new goals, implement a routine, (yea...that lasted about two weeks) put in place an organizational system, new notebooks, pens, clothes, shoes, makeup for us gals, haircuts for you guys, new activity and organizations to sign up for. Wasn't all of that always so exciting? I LOVED the first day of school and I always took pride in all of my new school supplies and felt like I had already achieved so much by just getting everything on my school supply list accomplished. Books covered, 4 #2 pencils, 1 red pen, 2 blue pens, a protractor, (did we ever use those?) a ruler, pencil sharpener. Check, check and check! I was off to a fantastic start and I looked really cute in my new clothes, shoes and haircut. Did you feel a similar sense of accomplishment?
Think about it, FLASHERS! The start of a new school year always gave us the gift of a clean slate. I don't think we have to give that clean slate up just because we don't conduct our day according to the ringing of a bell. So, get out your erasers and wipe your slate clean and start all over again to set new goals!
If you are in the position to help other children feel that sense of pride in being prepared and having the right school supplies...PLEASE take a moment to help by participating in one of the many School Supply donation campaigns, Snyder Plumbing has drop off locations all around town. Check out the post below for details.
Wishing you a Clean Slate, FLASHERS! Take a moment to reset some priorities and goals! :)

- Draw and cut out a long oval for the butterfly body, a circle for the butterfly head, and two small ovals for the butterfly antenna.

Black Magic Riddle Game
Rules:
- You must be in a room with a black object in it.
- Two people, called spies, must know the secret behind black magic.
Directions:
- The two spies explain to the other children that they can read each other's minds.
- Spy 1 will leave the room.
- While Spy 1 is no longer in the room, Spy 2 will ask the other children to pick any object in the room and clarify what color it is.
- Spy 1 returns to the room.
- Spy 2 will ask Spy 1 a series of questions, such as “Is it the blue shoe?”. Spy 1 will answer “no” to every question asked by Spy 2. Spy 2 must hold off on asking Spy 2 a question using the correct object.
- After a few different objects, Spy 2 will then ask about a black-colored object, such as “Is it the black chair?”. Spy 1 will answer “no.” However, Spy 1 knows that the object directly after the black one is the correct one.
- Spy 2 will then ask Spy 1 if the correct object chosen by the kids is the object and Spy 2 will answer “Yes”.
Secret:
- The object chosen directly after the black object is the correct one that was picked by the other children.
Tip: These games are great for problem-solving and collaborative thinking!

This little girl is a true scream queen - not really, she's just a bit of a scaredy cat. She was found as a stray so who knows what was chasing her out there! We do know that she certainly is pretty. It will take her a bit to warm up, but we think she will do well in a nice quiet home with loving, patient humans to help guide her way. Come on in and see if she's the right

New Study shows people who workout on the weekends have the same benefits as those who work out throughout the week.
If you often find yourself too busy to squeeze exercise into your Monday-Friday, a new study should help alleviate any anxiety you feel about it. It was recently published that “weekend warriors” who work out mostly on Saturdays and Sundays had similarly lower risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke as those who got their sweat sessions in throughout the week.
Researchers looked at data on 89,573 individuals involved in the U.K. Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database. Using the guidance that people should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week, they examined whether it mattered when those minutes were achieved.
About 42% of the subjects were active weekend warriors and 24% were active-regular exercisers, spreading their workouts out over several days. Both patterns were associated with lower risks of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and stroke, when compared to an inactive group.

Message Center
The message center goes modern and just in time for the start of school. This sleek board was made from a piece of glass that's painted on the back and framed to resemble a window. Messages written with dry-erase markers can be wiped off easily and updated on a daily basis. Another idea is to find an old frame at one of the many second hand shops we have in Vero. Spray paint the frame a gloss white and paint one side of the glass a color of your choice. Voila! You're on your way to an organized year. :)

HSVB temporarily closes admission department
The Humane Society of Vero Beach is having to temporarily close admissions down due to a significant increase in owner surrenders and strays entering the shelter. HSVB is beyond capacity and has had a 71% increase in owner surrenders and 25% increase in strays, year to date.
Despite the temporary closure, HSVB remains committed to finding forever homes for the animals currently in their care. Adoption services are still available, and is fully staffed to answer inquiries, facilitate adoption processes, and assist potential adopters in finding the perfect furry companion. In addition, HSVB is helping by providing tips on their website if you found a dog or if you need to rehome a dog.
