HelloFLASHERS~
With Mother’s Day this weekend I have to tell you... I feel like the luckiest gal on earth to still have my mother around.. As the years tick by and her body is forced to feel the toll of her 90 years, our responsibilities to each other have changed a bit. Mom lives next-door, but I moved in with her this past October. My kids and I tease her that we wish we had a camera on her 24/7 because so many of her comments and reactions would definitely go viral in today’s world!
What an honor and privilege to be back under her roof and able to spend this precious time with her. We have such fun and we laugh every day! As most mothers, my mother would do anything in the world for me and has done just that for 64 years. Many of you FLASHERS got to know her a bit through her weekly column, 'My View From Over The Hill'. She had quite a fan base built up! Unfortunately she just isn't up to writing weekly anymore. However, I hope she will surprise us and write a column every once in a while. So keep your eye out for one. I did include one of her columns from our archives this week. All of those columns that chronicle her amazing life are such a treasure now!
Hug your mom FLASHERS if you are lucky enough to still have her around. Call and make her feel like the incredibly special person she is. If you no longer have your mom here in person… I have no doubt that you carry her with you every day and that you can still hear her voice guiding you at times. That’s just the way moms are … Always there!
Happy Mother’s Day Mom! I have absolutely no idea where I’d be without you! Please keep on living life the way you do… You are simply amazing and give us so much joy with your wit and positive attitude! I love you!

STORIES FROM MY MOM
(In honor of Mother's Day)
from our archives
My Mom was an amazing lady who died much too young at 61. I have told you before about my Dad bringing her in to run our downtown movie theater because she was a movie fan and he wasn't. She did so well that he continued to build her more and she wound up with 6 theaters in Miami, one in Hollywood, FL, the first theatre in Boynton, FL. and then they bought 5 more in Tampa. Well, he did the same thing to her with a restaurant. Dad had a tenant who leased a large space next to our downtown theater as a restaurant. The man was operating it pretty much as a nightclub with dinner and entertainment. Unfortunately, it was too expensive for the downtown area and he had to close.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF A STROKE
The acronym traditionally used to help people remember stroke symptoms is FAST (face, arms, speech, and time). More recently, medical experts have expanded that to BE FAST, with the additions of balance and eyes. The BE stands for:
• Balance - Nerves that regulate balance and coordination may be affected by a stroke. A sudden inability to walk normally or maintain an upright position are among the more notable symptoms.
• Eyes - Disruption of normal vision may also be a symptom of a stroke, because lack of blood to the brain can impact the optic nerves.

Spa time (brushing) is important to keep her long luxurious coat in good
shape. Jessie's worth it! Foster or Adopt - let's just get her home!

WHEN TELEPHONE NUMBERS WERE CONTROVERSIAL
As seen on interesting facts
Telephone numbers were first used in 1879, after a measles epidemic hit Lowell, Massachusetts, keeping many of the local switchboard operators — on whom the earliest telephone systems depended — out of work. The response was to designate phone subscribers by number, allowing new operators to quickly get up to speed without knowing the hundreds of local subscribers by name, although management initially worried that customers would object to numerical identification as dehumanizing. In the 1960s, after most American communities had adopted an alphanumeric system that included the name of the local exchange, customers did indeed balk at the switch from the alphanumeric system to all-digit phone numbers, with organizations such as the Anti-Digit Dialing League emerging to remind the phone overlords that human beings existed within the sea of numbers.
NOW... GO CALL YOUR MOTHER! :)

ORGANIZE MOM FOR MOTHERS DAY! :)
Gifts are always wonderful to receive, but sometimes we run out of the perfect idea. This week's tip might just be that perfect idea and so appreciated! Might Mom really just want a little help with some of those tasks on the to-do list? Try this organizational hack with $1 shoe boxes from Dollar Tree. It will probably put a huge smile on her face! If you shop at Sam's and buy in bulk, simply repackage the food into smaller more manageable packages when you get home. That way they will be easier to stack and store in the plastic bins.

Student of the Year and Award-Winning Author Celebrated at
Literacy Services of Indian River County’s 2023
Love of Literacy Luncheon
| |
|
On March 17th, literacy lovers came together to celebrate the life-changing
work of Literacy Services of Indian River County. The 2023 Love of Literacy Luncheon, held at the Quail Valley River Club, was filled to capacity while participants honored the Student of the Year and enjoyed the engaging conversation of an award-winning author.
Long-time tutor, Dom Restuccia, and Community Engagement Coordinator, Elida Gomez, announced the Student of Year, Daniel Betancourt, who gave a heart-warming speech that wowed the crowd with laughter and tears! He thanked Dom, his fabulous volunteer tutor, for being so helpful and supportive. He thanked his family for believing in him. He thanked the donors for making the free tutoring services possible. And lastly, he thanked himself for being so determined and disciplined.
Next, author Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop took the stage for an engaging conversation with Board Member and long-time friend, Lorna Stengel. Elizabeth also read from her recent memoir, Daughter of Spies: Family Secrets and Wartime Lies, and answered questions from the audience.
"We are thrilled with the positive feedback from our 2023 Love of Literacy Luncheon, so proud of our Student of the Year and the goals he has now made for the future, grateful for our volunteer tutors, appreciative of our sponsors, and excited to have such an accomplished author as our keynote speaker," said Shannon Maitland, Executive Director.
About Literacy Services of IRC:
Literacy Services of Indian River County is a non-profit organization that provides quality tutoring, free of charge, to adults seeking help in reading or learning English. Our trained volunteers help adult students improve their literacy and language skills, enabling them to become more informed, engaged, and financially stable members of our community. one-to-one tutoring to Indian River County residents aged 16 and older. Literacy Services also offers group classes, virtual tutoring, and workplace tutoring at the request of local employers.
There are currently 36 students on the waitlist for tutoring. New tutors are always needed. Volunteers do not need prior teaching experience; they receive training and resources from Literacy Services.

YOUTH GUIDANCE RECEIVES
$15,000 GRANT
FROM HEAD, HEART, HANDS OF INDIAN RIVER CLUB
Youth Guidance was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from Head, Heart, Hands
of Indian River Club. This grant will fund Youth Guidance afterschool programs, summer camp, and healthy meals served daily to children in need living in Indian River County.
Youth Guidance anticipates serving 250 children and young adults ages 5-24 this year. Programs focus on three core areas: Academic enrichment, life skills, and vocational training. They include financial literacy, gardening, bicycle repair, culinary arts, woodworking, web design, equestrian, homework help, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).
For teenagers and young adults, Youth Guidance provides certification-based programs, such as culinary arts and a state-registered pre-apprenticeship program, in which students receive training in HVAC, welding, plumbing, carpentry and electric.
“Our goal is to help youth break the cycle of poverty. One of the ways we do this is by providing opportunities for our youth to access in-demand careers within the trade sector,” said Youth Guidance Executive Director Phil Barnes. “Trades jobs in Indian River County are expected to grow 13% over the next eight years, with an average wage of $55,588. These are lucrative careers that can help our youth support themselves and their families.”
All certifications, programs, and meals at Youth Guidance are provided free of charge, thanks to the generosity of the Indian River Club and other local supporters.
If you are interested in learning more about Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy or making a donation, pleasecall 772.492.3933, or visit our website.
