5th Sunday after Epiphany

Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ.

The scripture readings for this week include:

AdventELC's theme for the year is: Seeing Christ Clearly in 2020. We look to direct our attention and energy in two ways: seeing Christ clearly personally and showing Christ clearly to the world.
One of the ways to see Christ clearly is through supporting one another, including the leaders and future ministers in Christ's Church!

Cody Blust was the Leadership in Context (LIC) here at AdventELC for 2 years from 2015-2017.

The Leadership in Context (LIC) program is for seminary students in the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Youth and Family Ministry and occurs during a student's first two years of study. The goal of the program is to allow students to observe and gain experience in ministry leadership and to promote critical reflection on these observations and experiences. The connection of contextual activity with academic practical ministry coursework infuses ministry practice with intellectual rigor and focuses intellectual pursuits on the real needs of people. Read more about the LIC program here.

After passing all of your classes, interviews, Clinical Pastoral Education ( CPE), LIC, internship, being approved by a candidacy panel, graduating from Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University, and interviewing at churches in your assigned Synod, Cody has now received his first call as Pastor to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Evansville, Indiana.

Now that Cody has received a call as Pastor, he is now ready to be ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament. Cody will be ordained on February 22, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sidney, Ohio . He will be ordained by the laying on of hands with his future Bishop, The Reverend Dr. William Gafkjen presiding. Pastor Layne will be participating in the service as well.

Attending an ordination is a wonderful way to see Christ clearly at work in the church! Cody invites each and every one of you to this wonderful, once in a lifetime occasion! If you would like to attend, please indicate in the RSVP below. If you cannot attend but would like to send Cody a gift, card, or blessing, please contact Pastor Layne and he will be glad to make sure Cody gets it. Either way, please pray for both Cody and Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in this exciting time of new beginnings!

Adult Bible Study digs into how we got the Bible
Every Sunday from 10am-10:45am all adults are welcome to the Adult Sunday School Class.

During the last two weeks in January the Adult Sunday School class, led by Pastor Aaron, looked at three questions:

  1. How was it decided which books got into the Bible?
  2. What about all the ones that didn’t?
  3. Should we care about them?

Starting this week the class will take a look at the Books between
the two Testaments: What Christians Should Know about the Apocrypha.

We are all starting from basically the same place. Don't know what the Apocrypha is, neither do most of us! Come with your curiosity and join the journey!
Donations are Needed

Midweek Lenten Series Announced
What is faith? The text from Hebrews 11:1 defines it in this way:  “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

This series focuses on the book of Hebrews, especially the eleventh chapter. The first four weeks provide a journey through the faith of the Old Testament figures, especially Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the Israelites. The fifth week brings us to Jesus, “the perfecter of our faith,” and his path to the cross.
Join us for this wonderful worship series as well as our FREE Soup Supper! Every Wednesday all are welcome to sit down for some food and fellowship. Fill your stomach and your heart as we get to know each other and worship with on another!

Every Picture Can Tell God's Story
What use do you make of the photographs you've taken or received? Have you ever thought of using them as a way to witness to Jesus' saving love and God's power and provision in our lives? The images you've captured through the lens of your camera can tell God's story in a unique, creative, and compelling way.
Join us as we create "Witness Books" in keeping with the church's theme of seeing God clearly in 2020. We will be using photographs, Bible verses, hymns, prayers and poems. Join us at 10:00 in the church Narthex. Bring your Bible. For more information, call Julie Page 614-519-1014 or Jane Moore 734-735-1216.
