Terra Nova, the award-winning play written by Ted Tally and directed by Scott Ramp, opens July 8 at Pentacle Theatre.

In the winter of 1911-1912, five Englishmen and five Norwegians raced each other to the bottom of the Earth. Only the Norwegians returned.

Terra Nova is the story of the ill-fated English expedition to be the first to reach the south pole, led by Capt. Robert Falcon Scott.

Scott’s discovery that the Norwegian team had preceded him, the bravery, suffering and self-sacrifice of the English team, and the final tragedy, are told in a mixture of fantasy and realism that underlines both the human and epic qualities of this thrilling adventure.

She Kills Monsters open auditions are Saturday
What: Open auditions for She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition, written by Qui Nguyen, directed by MaryKate Lindbeck.

When: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, July 9.

Where: Pentacle Theatre, 324 52nd Ave. NW — located off Highway 22, about 6 miles west of downtown Salem, Oregon.
Casting call: Seeking an ensemble of at least 10 actors, age 18+, able to play high school age.
  • Except for the core party, all actors will play multiple roles to create an ensemble of 40+ featured characters, monsters and special effects.
  • All actors will perform some combination of choreographed dance, stage combat and puppetry.
  • For a full list of roles, genders and ages, please visit our auditions page.

Things to know:  Lobby doors open at 12:30 p.m. and open auditions for all roles begin promptly at 1 p.m. Please be on time and plan to stay through 5 p.m.

Hot list offers range of opportunities for 2023
On Saturday, July 2, the Script Reading Committee revealed the hot list of plays eligible for production in 2023.

You can see the hot list here. Proposing directors need to contact me by July 11 if they intend to propose. Proposals are due July 18.

The theater is hoping to announce the 2023 season of seven plays and musicals in mid-August.
We keep finding reasons to celebrate
It isn't every Monday that I get an email stating that we are going to receive a large grant. Last Monday was different. I learned that Business Oregon will provide Pentacle Theatre a grant of $224,850.

The grant program was the result of hard work and excellent lobbying by the Independent Venue Coalition and Oregon Arts Anchors to bring much needed help to the arts economy. As many industries are returning to 2019 levels of business, live venues have seen a slower recovery. People just aren't returning to audiences at prepandemic rates. This grant from Business Oregon will allow us to weather the final phases of the pandemic.

Looking for someone to thank? State representatives Rob Nosse and David Gomberg were instrumental in moving this fund through the legislative process.

Despite being dark until last fall, the fans of Pentacle Theatre earned us a silver medal in the 2022 Best of the Willamette Valley. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. This is one of two "best of" competitions in the area. The other is the Statesman Journal's "Best of the Mid-Valley." We appreciate the patrons and volunteers who take the time to nominate and vote for Pentacle Theatre.

Salem Art Fair is coming right up, July 15 to 17. We will be in the Cultural Corridor in a booth this year. Sadly, our beloved wagon simply cannot withstand another trip to the fair in its current condition. But, good news, you will still have the chance to win a pair of season tickets for next year's productions while visiting with our amazing volunteers.
