Louisiana Right to Life Executive Director Benjamin Clapper said the following: "It is disgraceful that Louisiana citizens would resort to such petty behavior as stealing and vandalizing pro-life signs. We may disagree on issues such as abortion, but we must be able to respectfully disagree without damaging private property. I call on
Louisiana for Personal Freedoms, the New Orleans Abortion Fund, and other organizations opposing Amendment #1 to publicly call for a stop to these illegal behaviors."
This surveillance video shows a sign being stolen outside the Cortec Manufacturing Facility in Houma, LA on Saturday September 26. In another video angle not shown, the license plate number is identified. Justin Corte of Cortec Manufacturing Facility reported the theft and video to the local police. "I am disappointed that my Love Life Amendment sign was stolen in front of my business. I have reported the incident to the local police. The free exchange of ideas is what makes this nation great. Clearly these vandals don’t think they have an upper hand in the hall of ideas if stealing is what they must resort to."
Also this weekend, a 4' x 8' vinyl banner in front of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Slidell was stolen along with multiple smaller yard signs through the neighborhood. Fr. David Frank, Parochial Vicar at St. Luke the Evangelist, said, "At first I was disturbed that someone would destroy church property and private property throughout our neighborhood, but after some reflection, I was encouraged because we must be close to success if somebody is that spiteful and desperate to stop us."
This follows theft of signs, both of the small and large variety, in Metairie, Mandeville, and New Orleans in the past two weeks. In Mandeville, a 4'x8' banner was stolen from the premises of St. Timothy on the Northshore United Methodist Church.
