Their Future's Too Bright Not to Wear Shades
Forgive the mangling of the ‘80s song, The Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades by Timbuk 3, https://youtu.be/8qrriKcwvlY. Yet the point being made is that protecting the eyes of your children from the harmful effects of UV rays should start when they are young. Very young.
Why?
Let’s start with the fact that the lens of your child's eye transmits about 70 percent more UV than yours. That puts their retina at a larger risk. For children under 10, the fragility of their eyes and skin also makes them more susceptible as well.
Then consider the fact that most children are outside far more adults. In fact, for most of us, more than half of our exposure to the sun will occur during the first 20 years of our life.
Kids being shorter means they are constantly looking up. So, when they are outdoors…you know where this is going. Those big floppy hats we put on younger children help. Unfortunately, the sun can reflect off the water and other surfaces and still impact their eyes.
