May 2025 Vol. 8 Issue 11

In this issue: The theme for the 88th Annual Oregon Logging Conference in 2026 has been selected, meet 2026 OLC President Mike McKibbin, program planning is underway, and OLC Foundation scholarship recipients soon to be announced.

88th Annual OLC Theme is

Responsible Forestry Today, Healthy Forests Tomorrow

“Responsible Forestry Today, Healthy Forests Tomorrow” is the theme that will guide the 88th Annual Oregon Logging Conference, scheduled for February 19 – 21, 2026 in Eugene, OR.

The theme was selected at the May 17th OLC Board of Directors meeting and family gathering in Florence, Oregon. 1st Vice President Terry Mann suggested this year's theme which is actually the tagline on his company's email.

Mann explained, "the quote by Aldo Leopold was my real inspiration behind coming up with the tagline for my company email."

Leopold's quote; "I have read many definitions of what is a conservationist and written not a few myself, but I suspect that the best one is written not with a pen, but with an axe. It is a matter of what a man thinks about while chopping, or while deciding what to chop. A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke he is writing his signature on the face of his land."

"The tagline in my company email is Responsible Forestry Today, Healthy Forests For The Future," Mann said. "I was encouraged by OLC manager Rikki Wellman to submit this to be considered for the theme. The board liked the tagline and with a minor change it was selected as the theme of the 2026 OLC," Mann said.

OLC President Mike McKibbin said, "Our theme for 2026 provides a clear solution to the issues we currently face with our Oregon forests. We essentially have a choice: take care of our forests with sound forest management practices or stay on the current course which leads to unhealthy conditions and massive wildfires," he added. McKibbin said, "The solutions to the problems are simple and benefit all Oregonians by providing healthy forests that store carbon and provide clean water while also producing wood products that we all enjoy."
