Capitol Update

Last week, DEED announced that the Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) payroll tax rate will be 0.88 percent. This is a 25% increase in the tax from the level originally proposed. This rate is a percentage of an employee's wages that will be paid by the employee and their employer to fund the program. DEED has created a calculator tool to help employers and individuals estimate costs under PFML. Payroll taxes will be first due in April 2026, after the program launches in January 2026.

For those that do not know, the Lakeville Chamber, along with about 50 other local chambers, is a member of the MN Chamber Federation. Here are a couple of the items they are actively working on this session.

  • The Minnesota Chamber is working on improving the existing PFML law for employers and employees. CLICK HERE to take a one-question survey on what changes to the law would most benefit your business.
  • For the Earned Sick and Safe Time mandate, the Minnesota Chamber is proposing the following changes:
  • Repeal the “more generous PTO” change
  • Adjusting notice and documentation provisions and addressing SST misuse issues (employer workability concerns)
  • Frontloading fix
  • Possible exemptions

Back On – Again…

The Beneficial ownership reporting requirements are, as of right now, back in effect. The new reporting deadline is March 21, 2025 for most companies. You can find more information, and file your report here - FinCEN.

Thank you Heidi!

Last Friday we welcomed our new County Manager, Heidi Welsch, to Good Morning Lakeville. Heidi highlighted her background and talked to us about things like population projections, service requirements and priorities, challenges facing the county, among other things.

Thank you to B-52 Burgers + Brew for hosting and breakfast, to Dunn Brothers Lakeville for coffee, to our program sponsors – Frandsen Bank & Trust and Minnesota Energy Resources – and to all of you who continue to make this one of our favorite events each month!

Next month is going to be really cool – we will learn about an event that happens worldwide and LAKEVILLE is the only place in the United States who currently hosts this.
