Entry fees are just $25 and this contest is open to all members of America's Newspapers.
Entries must have been published — online or in print — by a daily or non-daily newspaper between Jan. 1, 2021, and May 27, 2022. The deadline for entries is 4 p.m. CDT on Friday, May 27.

America's Newspapers will recognize editorial page excellence at its annual meeting this fall
|
The Carmage Walls Commentary Award recognizes thoughtful, courageous and constructive editorial page leadership on issues specifically relevant to the newspaper’s primary readership.
Awards will be presented in each of two circulation categories — over 50,000 circulation and under 50,000 circulation.
In each circulation group, the first-place winner will receive a plaque and a cash award of $2,000. Second-place winners will receive a plaque and $1,000.

What's the greatest opportunity for newspapers in the future? We have a blank canvass to write our own future as long as we believe that we are capable, relevant and willing to compete. Most newspaper companies have many years of existence, built an established reputable, trusted brand that has proven capable to adapt with whatever the newest technology that has been developed. As long as newspapers are willing to continue to adapt, make changes and invest in new opportunities, the future of newspapers will last for another 100 plus years. There will always be a new competitor in our markets, either a direct competitor or the newest social media platform, but they lack the established brand and history we have built.

Previous Experience: In 2007, I began as an account executive for a small, three-times-a-week publication in rural Ohio that had a circulation of 5,500. I started as a new business account rep and worked to cultivate new revenue sources. Within three years, I built an account list from zero annual revenue to over a half million annually. From there, I was promoted to ad director over two paid publications and two shoppers, plus gained another weekly paid newspaper the following year to oversee.
Digital advertising has always been one of my strengths and interests, so when our region added an agency in 2017, I stepped into a role within it, as well.
In 2019, I was promoted to my current role as regional advertising director, overseeing all revenue for our Ohio and Michigan publications, our digital agency and our events division for APG Media.
What I like most about my job: There are several aspects that I love about this job. I enjoy developing the business relationships with advertisers, along with representing a product that serves communities and residents who depend on their local newspapers to provide the information that matters to them or impacts their life, but the most rewarding part is watching my team members succeed. It’s great to hit budget or start a new product, but to see your team thrive, grow and gain confidence — that’s the real fun of this job. Celebrating my team's success or achievements, cheering them on and pushing them to surpass what they did not think they were capable of doing, that is what drives me.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), joined by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conecticut), has introduced the Competition and Transparency in Digital Advertising Act.
The bill would restore and protect competition in digital advertising by eliminating conflicts of interest that have allowed the leading platforms in the market to manipulate ad auctions and impose monopoly rents on a broad swath of the American economy.

KPC Media to sell to Fort Wayne Newspapers

Ogden Newspapers, through its partnership with Journal Gazette Co. in the Fort Wayne Newspapers company, has entered into an agreement to purchase KPC Media, according to Randy Cope, Cribb, Cope & Potts, who represents the Witwer family, owner of KPC Media.

Jefferson City News Tribune general manager dies unexpectedly
|
David Meadows, general manager of the Jefferson City News Tribune in Missouri, died May 11 at the age of 58.
Nat Lea IV, president and chief executive officer of WEHCO Media, owners of Central Missouri Newspapers Inc., said of Meadows: "David was a fine person and a great leader; he will be missed."
