East Theriot Canal Dredging
The NLLD has completed the mechanical dredging of the East Theriot Canal with the use of the District's marsh buggy (pictured above).

This maintenance project includes clearing East Theriot Canal and adjacent rights of ways of obstructions and vegetation from the canal's intersection at Bayou Lafourche to near Lake Bouef in order to improve drainage in the area. It is part of a larger effort to perform maintenance dredging in the 40 Arpent Canal, the 80 Arpent Canal, the Sam Foret Canal and the Halpin Canal in that area.
NLLD Takes the Show on the Road
Executive Director and Commissioners Participate in Community and Industry Events
Bayou Industrial Group
NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois was the featured speaker at the BIG Luncheon on May 13 in Thibodaux. Bourgeois spoke about the District's recently completed and under construction levee and drainage projects, the National Flood Insurance Program, and preparations for the upcoming hurricane season.
Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana
Earlier this month, NLLD Board of Commissioners President Cory Kief, other NLLD Commissioners and Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois attended the 34th annual ALBL Workshop in Baton Rouge.

Kief serves as ALBL President.
"Working for Our Coast"
Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois explained the challenges our coastal community faces with regard to subsidence and flood protection, as well as the significant career opportunities opening up to address those challenges as part of Restore or Retreat's "Working for Our Coast" event April 25 at Fletcher Technical Community College.

Nearly 200 Lafourche Parish ninth graders participated in the day designed to raise awareness about the coastal crisis and promote careers in the coastal and environmental fields to students. Other speakers discussed coastal careers like engineering, design, construction, biology, landscape architecture, geomatics, and more during the program.

National Flood Insurance Program Update to LA CPRA
On behalf of the Louisiana Flood Risk Coalition, Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois gave an update to the LA Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority on May 15 on the National Flood Insurance Program. He was joined by Caitlin Berni and Ilena Ledet from GNO Inc's Coalition for Sustainable Flood Insurance.

Congress is expected to temporarily extend the NFIP once again when it expires on May 31. The NLLD and LA Flood Risk Coalition have been working with members of Congress and policymakers to push for reforms to the NFIP that would credit communities like ours for locally built flood protection, reduce premiums and sustain the program.
Rip rap has been installed along the Bayou Des Allemands levee to defend the levee against long-term erosion caused by waves and protect the integrity of the levee should it become inundated with flood waters.

About the NLLD
The North Lafourche Conservation, Levee, and Drainage District (known as NLLD) was formed in 1992 to provide drainage and flood protection services for the northern portion of Lafourche Parish, including the entire parish north of the Intracoastal Canal.   The District includes over 250 miles of levees and drainage canals, and over 40 pump stations.
