SBA Small Business Person of the Year

Nominees from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam will compete for the title of the National Small Business Person of the Year, SBA’s signature award. One from each will be selected. Nominees must demonstrate success in business as well as contributions to their local communities.

Nominations must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. ET on December 7, 2023.

IRS requests comments on expanding tax certainty and issue resolution programs for business taxpayers

The IRS’s Strategic Operating Plan is helping small businesses resolve potential compliance issues up front, through expanded pre-filing and tax certainty programs. The IRS requests comments from small businesses about improving and expanding tax certainty and issue resolution options for business taxpayers by March 31, 2024.

Federal Trade Commission announces challenge to prevent harms of AI-enabled voice cloning

The FTC is running an exploratory challenge to encourage the development of multidisciplinary approaches—from products to policies to procedures—aimed at protecting consumers from AI-enabled voice cloning harms, such as fraud and the broader misuse of biometric data and creative content. The goal of the Challenge is to foster breakthrough ideas on preventing, monitoring, and evaluating malicious voice cloning. Win $25,000 in the fight against voice cloning technology.

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) published guidelines for the implementation of a new worksharing initiative with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO): the Accelerated Patent Grant (APG).

The new arrangement gives eligible patent applicants the option of using an expedited process for obtaining a patent grant in Mexico based on a U.S. patent grant.
