Before They Were Art Pieces....

They're works of art - in progress. These Venetian styled gondolas posts will soon be turned into amazing art pieces. The mooring posts, being received by City staff, are part of the City's Venice in the Gables public art project. A call to artists was sent throughout the region seeking inspired designs. City to Enforce Prohibition of Plastic Bags

After conducting a yearlong campaign to educate stores and restaurants about the city's prohibition on single-use plastic bags, Coral Gables Code Enforcement will begin to issue citations starting on May 10 to those businesses that don't comply with this ordinance. On May of last year, the City of Coral Gables became the first municipality in Florida to prohibit single-use carry out plastic bags. All retail establishments in our city, including supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, shops, service stations, restaurants and any other sales outlets must replace single-use plastic bags with reusable, recyclable or compostable alternatives. Registration is Now Open for Summer Camps

Don't wait until the last minute to register your kids for the City of Coral Gables summer camps. Registration is now open at the War Memorial Youth Center anytime Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 12 noon. Residents must show two state-issued proofs of Gables residency, birth certificate and a report card of the child to be enrolled. Read more...

Recycle Your Electronics & Dispose Hazardous Waste on Saturday

Taking place this Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon is the Household Hazardous Waste Collection. Drop off your old electronics and large cardboard, dispose of your household hazardous waste or shred any sensitive documents, all for free by simply bringing them to City Hall's parking lot at 405 Biltmore Way. Pioneer Day Celebrates History of Early Pioneer Families

Don't miss Pioneer Day this Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. at Pinewood Cemetery located on Erwin Road just south of Sunset Drive. Pinewood Cemetery is the final resting place of early families from the 1800s and early 1900s. Guest speaker is certified arborist Jorge L. Rivera who will speak on the Pioneers' use of native plants in early South Florida. The event is presented in collaboration with the Pinewood Cemetery Advisory Board. FDOT is doing drainage work on Bird Road (SW 40 Street) and Red Road (SW 57 Avenue) until April. Expect a right lane closure along Bird Road traveling westbound from Alhambra Circle to Red Road, and a right turn lane closure along SW 57 Avenue.
