Over the past two days, ICE raids disrupted the lives of many of our families, friends and neighbors, spreading fear in communities across LA County, including Culver City. On the eve of LA Pride and without request from local or state leaders, the Trump administration is deploying two thousand California National Guard soldiers to supposedly quell clashes between peaceful protestors and federal agents. On top of this, the Secretary of Defense Hegseth has threatened to mobilize active duty Marines from Pendleton to LA.

Los Angeles County is built upon an immigrant heritage and immigrant labor. We deserve dignity, success, & joy where we live, play, study, and at places of work - not needless fear.

Every child should feel valued, worthy, and a sense of belonging - and that begins with creating safe school spaces. Culver City is a sanctuary city and Culver City Unified School District is a safe haven for our students, families, and staff. In December 2024, the Board of Education passed Resolution 21, reifying our commitment to safety for all. Safe school spaces resources are available here: https://tinyurl.com/ccusdsafeschools We do not collect or share information of student or family immigration status, your privacy is protected. We believe every child is entitled to a free public education, without fear of deportation due to school staff collusion with federal authorities.

I urge all of us to know and assert our rights so that we can all be as safe as possible in unity and solidarity. Stay calm. Stay alert. Be informed. Be present. Document. Be peaceful and organized. We are powerful together when we care for one another.

There are protests scheduled for Monday and beyond while we prepare to celebrate the end of school and our graduates. The federal administration's show of force may be prolonged. They want us to be weary. We won't buckle in apathy and fear. Success in this marathon requires empathy, metering of energy/resources, vigilance, and solidarity. You are validated in these uncertain times. It's ok to be concerned. Sometimes we need to stay home and recharge to continue another day of resistance. Do not doubt that you belong. We are Culver City. We are Los Angeles. We are California - where we uplift each other as we climb.

Ingat (blessings of safe passage),

Stephanie
