Revive2Thrive: Prop A investments underway

Major investments to ensure our flood infrastructure will be keeping neighborhoods safe for decades to come are underway. Thanks to voters approving the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) Prop A in November, Commissioner Garcia and our team are partnering with HCFCD to perform critical maintenance to increase the life of our flood control projects.

This month, Commissioner Garcia and Dr. Tina Petersen, HCFCD Executive Director, toured Precinct 2's Advisory Board to learn about some of the upcoming maintenance projects in the Aldine, Cloverleaf, and Channelview areas.

Thanks to federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), a gastroenterology lab at Harris Health's Quentin Mease Health Center is helping save lives. The lab opened a year ago to increase Harris Health's capacity for colonoscopy procedures. Since then, more than 1,330 patients have been resulting in about a dozen cancer diagnoses.

Colorectal cancer disproportionately affects the Black community, as they are approximately 20% more likely to get colorectal cancer and about 40% more likely to die from it than most other groups. This lab increases access to colorectal cancer screenings by making more appointments available and it is directly on a bus route, minimizing transportation burdens for those patients without a personal vehicle.

In the last month, Commissioner Garcia led to:

Approve Flood Control Prop A contracts: Commissioner Garcia approved contracts and additional staffing to put funds approved by voters in the Harris County Flood Control District’s Prop A to work to ensure the county’s infrastructure is operating properly to prevent flooding and make neighborhoods safer.  

Build affordable homes: Commissioner Garcia and Commissioners Court approved the selection of a vendor for the Pasadena Vista Project. As part of the 2017 Hurricane Harvey Disaster Recovery Program, this project will build 30 new affordable homes in safe, flood resistant areas in the Pasadena area. 

Expand the Holistic Assistance Response Team (HART): Commissioners Court approved 38 new positions to support the expansion of HART, a program that makes our county safer by creating mental health first responders to help community members experiencing crisis, freeing deputies to more quickly respond to dangerous crime.

Reimagine Navigation Blvd: Commissioners Court approved the design phase of the Reimagine Navigation Blvd project. This effort will transform the median along Navigation Blvd from Lockwood Dr. to SSgt Macario Garcia Dr. into a vibrant linear park with a bike trail, pedestrian-friendly amenities, and greenspace. Backed by a $10 million HGAC grant, construction is set to begin in 2026, improving connectivity for the community.

Precinct 2 is A Top Workplace: Commissioner Garcia celebrated with the Precinct 2 Human Resources and all precinct employees for being recognized as a Top Workplace for a midsized company by the Houston Chronicle.
