Following the passage of hurricane Irma and Maria, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country office in Kingston, in consultation with the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Government and its Centre for Entrepreneurial Development saw an opportunity to help rebuild and sustain the economy of the Islands through a total of USD 40 000 in support to small and micro businesses impacted by hurricanes Irma and Maria. The hurricane recovery micro grants ranging from $500 USD to 1500 USD targeted businesses hardest hit, some of them lone suppliers on their respective islands in the TCI archipelago.

Strengthened curricula on
Sustainable Energy coming to Jamaica
Workshop facilitator .... leading discussions on the sustainable energy curricula assessment report

CLIMATE & DISASTER RESILIENCE
UNDP-JCCP climate change
project on show at Denbigh
UNDP, through the Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership (JCCCP) Project, Jamaica, participated in the Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show during 4-6 August at the Denbigh Showgrounds, Clarendon. The UNDP-JCCCP participated as a partner organisation of the Jamaica 4-H as part of the Youth in Agriculture Village. Government Officials were particularly keen on the projects focusing on enhancing supply and efficiency of use of water for irrigation in agriculture. The green house made from plastic bottles by students of one of the project's partner schools, Richmond Park Primary, was a special hit as was the CARIO Farm Game.
Cario Farming Game launched to help persons make climate smart decisions
The UNDP-implemented Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership (J-CCCP) has partnered with Jamaica 4-H Clubs on an agriculture-based virtual game branded Cario. The game, launched in August at Jamaica's Denbigh Agricultural Show, provides a creative and fun medium through which to educate youth about climate change and climate smart decisions and actions, with the ultimate goal of creating lasting behavioural change. The game was developed as part of the communications campaign for Jamaica under Outcome 3 of the project and is administered by the Barbados-based JCCCP Project Management Unit.

Tie Budgets to SDG - UNDP Res Rep.
UN Resident Coordinator to Jamaica, Bruno Pouezat, surrounded by Team Jamaica at United Nations Headquarters last week during the High level Political forum on the Sustainable Development Goals where Jamaican submitted its Voluntary National Report. From Left Nicola Barker Murphy, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the UN Deidre Mills, Jamaica's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN; Dr Arlene Bailey, Senior Research Fellow and Associate Dean, SALISES, UWI, Mona;
Toni-Shae Freckleton, Director, Population, PIOJ; Prof Aldrie Henry-Lee, Professor and University Director for SALISES, UWI, Mona
FROM THE PEN OF UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE, BRUNO POUEZAT: To first achieve ‘Whole of Government’ adoption of the SDGs, everyone must understand that reaching the SDGs depends first and foremost on effective use of the state budget. Agenda 2030 cannot rely on Official Development Assistance (ODA). At less than 0.2% of Jamaica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), ODA represents less than 1% of the state budget (tax revenue is about 26% of GDP). Instead, Jamaica must ensure that all of government expenditure is understood, and accounted for, as contributing to the SDGs – as does private sector investment, whether foreign (5.6% of GDP in 2016) or indeed domestic (remittances alone amount to 17% of GDP). The objective must be for all resources available nationally to target explicitly the national development priorities."

Helping the Jamaican Iguana make it back to the wild: Why it matters to Jamaica
Special Report on a UNDP/GEF SGP Project
The endemic Jamaican Iguana once roamed freely in the wild over hundreds of years - until predators brought them to virtual extinction by the early 1900s. The UNDP-implemented GEF Small Grants Programme got involved in a project to restore their numbers in the wild. This is a story of how the Jamaican Iguana keeps their habitats flourishing and nurturing the cycle of life, and the results that have stunned the international scientific community. A Special Report of 'Jurassic' proportions.
