The revised state standards for visual and performing arts were approved by the State Board of Education on Jan. 9!

While change is never easy , this truly is an opportunity to introduce a generation of children to the arts and help them develop a love and appreciation for the arts that will last a lifetime.

Make it a priority to look through the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) content standards, and then take the time to share with me what resources and supports you foresee being helpful to you to successfully implement these standards. We have developed professional learning opportunities for district and school administrators to alert them to the shifts in the new standards and how they can support teachers during this transition. There are also sessions that can be customized and delivered for your school or district. But we know there’s more to do. Help direct our efforts to support you.

Now more than ever, it’s important to celebrate the amazing things happening in your classrooms for your students. If you’d like to share stories of impact and success, but aren’t sure where to begin, please reach out to me. You can always share arts education success stories in your school, district, and community by tweeting and mentioning @PCrooks_VAPA and @ArtsEmpowerSD , and using the hashtag #theArtsMatter.

San Diego Arts Network Retreat
Administrators and VAPA leaders will deepen their understanding of the revised California VAPA Standards and learn more about supporting teachers in their districts during the implementation phase at the San Diego Arts Network Retreat from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5.

Kickstart the Arts in (Y)Our Schools
Come together from 8 a.m. to noon May 10 with school and district administrators, teacher leaders, parents, and community arts organizations providing arts education programs to expand arts education for our students. The 2019 Kickstart the Arts in (Y)Our Schools event includes structured networking with colleagues and discussions on creating the best possible arts learning environments in San Diego County schools.

New Arts Standards and Curriculum Framework Update
The California Department of Education (CDE) is revising the VAPA Framework to incorporate and support the recently approved VAPA standards. You can join the California Department of Education VAPA Revisions Listserv for the latest information. Arts Integration Certificate
Gain instruction techniques in infusing standards-based arts strategies into the subjects of language arts, math, history-social science, and science through CSU San Marcos Extended Learning teacher professional development. The extended learning program includes networking, hands-on experiences, resources and tools for immediate implementation, and panel discussions. Participants can earn a certificate of proficiency in arts integration through the program.

CoTA 2019 STƐ@M Institute
Learn successful techniques to bring the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to life in your classroom through the lens of arts integration with the Collaborations: Teachers and Artists (CoTA) STƐ@M Institute . Participants will explore unique hands-on ways to address NGSS through innovative art methodologies. CoTA's 2nd annual STƐ @M Institute is designed for K-5 classroom teachers and will take place over four Saturdays: Feb. 2, 9, 23, and March 2. The institute is free to attend, but space is limited.

Holocaust Art and Writing Contest
Chapman University's Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education is offering middle and high school students an opportunity to participate in the 20th annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest.

Entries can be submitted in one of four categories: art, film, poetry, and prose. The projects entered must be based on the video testimonies from Holocaust survivors available on the approved websites listed in the contest rules.

Visit the Chapman University website to learn more, and download an Educator's Guide. The submission deadline is Feb. 1.

Inspirational Students Can Be Recognized on NBC 7 San Diego
The San Diego County Office of Education and NBC 7 San Diego are looking for inspirational students who are outstanding individuals on campus and within their community.

An Inspirational Student of the Month is a high school junior or senior who not only excels in their curriculum and demonstrates leadership, but who goes above and beyond and takes initiative to improve their school and community's environment through service, philanthropic efforts, personal values, or a positive influence. Nominate a student .

NBC 7 education reporter Rory Devine will recognize the selected student or teacher with a surprise visit to their classroom and interview the recipient for an Inspirational Teacher/Student of the Month segment that airs during a weekday newscast.

Start Planning Now for 2019 County Fair
As you plan for the spring semester, consider participating in the San Diego County Fair's educational programs. There are plenty of opportunities to highlight your students' work at the fair or enjoy a free school assembly or field trip.

  • Best of K-6 and Student Showcase — Enter your classroom’s projects into the fair and receive recognition, admission tickets for the instructor and students, and a rosette ribbon for your classroom. Categories include art, photography, fashion, graphics, science, writing, drafting, videography, woodworking, community service, and more. Deadline to enter is May 8.
  • School Tours — This free program for grades K-3 brings the fair to your school in a fun assembly program that takes place in April. Registration deadline is March 1.
  • Field Trip Program — This free school program invites all grades to take a free field trip to the fair on June 5. Registration deadline is April 30.

NPR Student Podcast Challenge
National Public Radio (NPR) is inviting San Diego County students in grades 5 to 12 to create a podcast and compete for a chance to win the grand prize. Winners will have their podcasts featured in segments on Morning Edition and All Things Considered on NPR.

Students are asked to put together a podcast with their class or extracurricular group, and then submit it to NPR with help from a teacher. Each podcast should be between three and 12 minutes long.

Extended School Partnership
There is still time to partner up with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) though its Extended School Partnership (ESP) program . Now in its seventh year, ESP enlivens the state standards by offering 6th- to 12th-grade teachers and their students a chance to discuss and connect to works of art through repeat visits led by the museum's gallery educators and teachers. ESP fosters collaboration with gallery educators, provides professional development for teachers, and encourages the use of the museum as an extension of their classroom. The program enhances a teacher’s knowledge and tools by using contemporary art to sharpen students' critical thinking skills and engage in collaborative dialogue, inquiry, and art making.

Each partnership culminates in a showcase of students' artwork, where they are invited to exhibit their artistic and academic accomplishments and welcome their family, school, and the community at large.

ESP showcases are held at the museum’s Downtown at Sundown event on the third Thursday of every month.
