| | Did you know...Given how the gleefully schlocky sci-fi musical attained a cult following as a midnight movie, it's odd to think of it getting a general release in theaters, but it did: Rocky Horror premiered in Los Angeles on Sept. 26, 1975. It didn't exactly set the box office on fire, but in true B-movie style, The Rocky Horror Picture Show rose from the grave and returned to theaters on April Fool's Day in 1976. Fans told their friends, those friends told their friends, people started dressing up in costumes. Decades later, you can still catch late-night screenings across the county. | Factoid...In the original stage version of Rocky Horror, the opening number was sung by the Usherette, a character that is traditionally played by the same actor who plays Magenta. In the film, Patricia Quinn plays Magenta, but her lips are only lip-syncing the song. The vocals are by Richard O'Brien, who played Riff Raff and who wrote the original play as well as the screenplay for the movie. | | Did you know...Susan Sarandon had a few acting credits under her belt when she took the role of prim, innocent Janet, but Rocky Horror was her first gig in a musical. To complicate matters, filming in the rain she caught pneumonia. As O'Brien explained to The Guardian, "When [Sarandon] sings 'Wild and Untamed Thing' in the pool, she should have been under medical supervision. She'd had a shocking cold and was shaking with fever, but still, she went on." | |

She made Kauai (and all of Hawaii) proud! | | Ho`omalu Ke Kai and the PAC teamed together to present free screening of David Attenborough's OCEAN on Friday, Oct 17. Over 490 people attended. Ho`omalu Ke Kai President Tim Leichliter (at podium) put together a panel of Kauai residents , all well known experts on environmental concerns and/or the oceans. Panel (left to right) included Teri Tico, filmmaker & environmental attorney; Capt Tara Leota, Marine Biologist, Commercial Diver & Underwater Photographer; McKenna Allen, aquatic biologist for the Hawaiʻi State Division of Aquatic Resources; Pelika Andrade is an Extension Agent with the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program and the founder and Executive Director of Nā Maka Onaona (and Pelika was prominently featured in the film - with one of the most moving passages in the movie!); Bill Unruh serves as the Climate Outreach Leader for the State of Hawaiʻi Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission; Andrew “Andy” Boyd is the Recycling Programs Coordinator for the County of Kauaʻi; and Billy Kinney with a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaiʻi, and Asst Director of Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana in Hāʻena | General Consensus: We need to adopt the ways of the Hawaiian elders to make a meaningful impact. | | Did you know...Use a power strip to shut off computers, printers, routers, modems, chargers, etc. when not in use to avoid phantom loads. Using a power strip to turn off your computer can save 50 kWh and $15 per year. | | Factoid: Cutting just two minutes per shower could save up to 463 kWh and $139 per year. | | Did you know...County of Kauai Recycling Dept published a terrific booklet with great intel on recycling locations, what they take, what they pay and tips on how you can help save this island, and, in doing so, save the planet. | | Coming Soon to a PAC Near You! | | |
