A message from HMS President, Bernard Kosto, MD

As we emerge from the pandemic bubble into the world of coping with COVID-19 variants...

we march forward while staying safe, with programming, membership, and stewardship for our medical collections.

Our first event since March 2020 was the insightful and engaging talk with Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel at the Bushnell. Two hundred members and guests enjoyed cocktails, hors d’ouevres, and a stimulating talk and Q & A. The takeaway message for me was the importance of collegiality in the world of physician wellness. Supporting HMS falls into this category.

I was also privileged to attend the long-delayed St. Francis Hospital luncheon for eight retired doctors, where I made a brief presentation urging support for HMS.

In the meantime, we will continue with virtual lectures, the movement of our books and artifacts to the Watkinson at Trinity, and our next in-person Annual Meeting at the Pond House in Elizabeth Park on September 13 with a prominent guest speaker.

Stay tuned.
Hartford Medical Society Hosts Event Addressing Physician Burnout

The Hartford Medical Society recently hosted a signature event, “Doctors Are Human Too,” at The Bushnell in Hartford, featuring the renowned physician, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel. Among other topics, Dr. Emanuel discussed the lasting impact of the pandemic on physicians, the key to happiness and life satisfaction, and ways physicians can adjust their behaviors to make room for a more fulfilling future in the field of medicine.

Local medical professionals, office staff, students, and peers gathered at The Bushnell to reconnect and and hear Dr. Emanuel’s thoughts on one of medicine’s most pressing and under-acknowledged concerns: physician burnout. Dr. Emanuel provided an insightful look at the growth of burnout and its root causes while informing attendees that burnout is surprisingly not attributed to the number of hours worked or the influx of tasks. Instead, burnout often occurs when there is a lack of purpose and support within the medical community. Read More.

HMS Donates the Blanchard Book Lab to the Watkinson Library
In May 2015, the HMS Board of Directors voted to create an onsite book repair lab within the HMS Library for the purpose of restoring the Society’s current collections. The librarian, Jennifer Miglus, used her talents and archival training for many years, working with HMS volunteers to ensure fragile books would be safely preserved for the future. The room was dedicated to HMS twice-president and long-time supporter Bradford M. Blanchard, MD, FACP, who passed away in June 2015. Read More.
