Arts Blast readers are a dedicated audience. Many are the musicians or artists who provide our entertainment and inspiration; many have been buyers of the tickets that keep those artists on the stage and in the galleries; and many others of us are armchair fans.

I couldn't find the originator of this Facebook post but it needs to be part of the discussion. Go ahead and add the cancellation of the Metropolitan Opera's 2020-2021 season to the list.
I don’t know if the audience side really understands how dire the situation is for millions of hard-working professionals.
Broadway is closed until 2021. Cirque du Soleil is filing for bankruptcy and cut 3500+ jobs. Feld Entertainment laid off 90% of its workforce permanently. Live Nation had to lay off a significant amount of employees. Cruise ship entertainers are out of work.

Theme park productions have no idea when they will be recalled. There are no concerts, festivals or touring productions scheduled until 2021 and if they don’t happen next year, they may never happen again. No Jazz Fest, no Coachella, no Bonnaroo, no EDC, no ROLLING STONES FINAL TOUR(S), and no SYMPHONIES....all gone.

French Quarter fest, just a fond memory.
It’s being predicted that 90% of independent music venues may close, the longer this continues. No more 1st Ave, Whiskey-a-GoGo, no more Tipitina’s, no more Red Rocks, all gone. Entertainment Management, Publicity, Live events coordinator, Performing arts organizations of all kinds-choirs, theatres, orchestras, dance companies-all are trying to figure out on a daily basis how to keep going and employ anyone they can in the field.
More than 12,000,000 people work entertainment production in the US and produce revenue in the multi billions of dollars, they are not insignificant and the industry cannot reopen until mass gatherings can happen again. This doesn’t include the additional layoff of venue management and bar staff, security and thousands of vendors.

Also, we can’t forget about the hundreds of thousands of performers and entertainers that make these careers possible, without them, there is no show.

So when you see your entertainment friends begging you to wear masks and stay home, understand that they are helplessly watching their industry crumble before our eyes because the country is doing so poorly at reducing the spread. This IS personal, their entire livelihood is dependent on social gathering and should no way accept being labeled “nonessential”.
Music and art are critical to a cheerful, thriving, and balanced society.
Everyone’s career and the whole industry is indefinitely on hold. PLEASE wear your mask (over your mouth AND your nose) and wash your hands.
Brandon Putzke
For Brandon Putzke, a 1990 graduate of Vero Beach High School, a career in music was all but inevitable. “I've always felt I'm a product of my environment,” he said. “I grew up watching (and even participating in) many of my father's theatrical productions. I sat, and slept, in the theatre seats while he ran rehearsals and my mom costumed his shows.” There was never a dull moment in the family’s artistic life. Even family trips were planned around some sort of theatrical production or musical event, Putzke said.

With percussion his life’s work for decades, he remembers that drums became a permanent part of his life in 5th grade and his first job soon after. It was in 7th grade, “when my mom, on piano, and I played in the pit for my dad's production of Minnie's Boys at the Musicana Dinner Theatre in Vero Beach, which was housed inside the old Sheraton Hotel on A1A.”
Putzke recalls his parents telling him they decided to move to Vero Beach from Michigan in the early 1980s because of “the great school system and the top rated band program at Vero Beach High School. Little did we know that I would graduate from VBHS and later become their percussion director (2000-2016) and then the Associate Band Director (2016-2019).” You can often hear him with his local band, Souljam, frequent headliners at Riverside Theatre’s Live in the Loop, and at community events. He is the co-founder/director of the Treasure Coast Percussion Camp, opened in 2005.

Both of Putzke's parents have been a large part of the arts community since they settled here. Margaret (Marge) Putzke is a former high school English and drama teacher and owned and operated Creative Costumes for 20 years. She was pianist/music director at St. Helen’s Catholic Church for 18 years and is currently pianist/organist at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
His father, Jon Putzke, has owned and operated theaters from Michigan to Florida. He’s a board member for Vero Beach Theatre Guild and operates Theatre-Go-Round Dinner Theatre at Costa de Estes.

One of Putzke’s gigs has been playing percussion at First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach for 15 years, “mostly for their cantatas during the holidays.” When Jacob Craig arrived to take over as director of music and arts at the church, the two became fast friends. After 19 years with the school district, Putzke was ready to go out on his own as a percussion teacher and performer with TC Percussion, and Craig had just the spot for him: Primo School of Performing Arts. Putzke has taught private lessons and group classes for 25 years and is in his second year with Primo.
He explained that the Primo faculty is very diverse and professional, “coming from all backgrounds and education. Students can take lessons or group classes/ensembles on just about every instrument. Primo is relatively small by design, allowing more one on one interaction and individualized instruction.”

Putzke’s classes are all things percussion for ages five through adult. Instruments include snare drum, drum set, hand drums, marimba/xylophone, timpani, and percussion accessories. That’s a lot of options but Putzke likes to promote “the TOTAL percussionist. Yes, some people will gravitate towards one, like drum set or marimba, but I encourage and try to get my students to play them ALL at some point.”

Giving credit where it’s due, Putzke said, “My parents and all the music teachers I've had in the past is why I'm doing (and LOVE) what I'm doing today.”

From Brevard Symphony Orchestra's Chris Confessore:

I am so pleased to announce the BSO's first full orchestra concert stream. This
stream will be a slightly revised version of a concert, originally scheduled for March 14, that was postponed. This concert will feature the full orchestra performing Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. In addition, I am thrilled to welcome Colleen Blagov, Principal Flute of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, who will perform Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major. This beautiful concert will be streamed for 72 hours beginning at 7 pm on Saturday, October 3

If you watched our first streamed concert, Streaming Strings, you know what a fantastic experience it was. I loved hearing our musicians perform together again. Beethoven's "Pastoral" will be performed in late September at the King Center for the Performing Arts without audience in attendance. As with Streaming Strings, it will be professionally recorded and produced.

Those who had purchased tickets for the original March concert will automatically receive the link to the concert. If you had not already bought tickets, you may now purchase “virtual tickets” in order to receive the link. During the stream, Maestro Confessore, staff members and musicians will be participating in the live chat starting at 7 pm on October 3. I hope you will watch and join in the conversation. To purchase your virtual ticket and sign-up, visit BrevardSymphony.com/Beethoven6.
Opera Takes a Hit
From the Metropolitan Opera:

A Message to Our Audience

We regret to inform you that the Metropolitan Opera has made the extremely difficult decision to cancel the entirety of the 2020–21 season, based on the advice of health officials who advise the Met and Lincoln Center. Because of the many hundreds of performers who are required to rehearse and perform in close quarters and because of the company’s large audience, it was determined that it would not be safe for the Met to resume until a vaccine is widely in use, herd immunity is established, and the wearing of masks and social distancing is no longer a medical requirement. Health officials have said this will likely take at least five to six months after a vaccine is initially made available. We want nothing more than to get back to creating operatic magic as only the Met can, but the safety of our company and the audience we serve must come first.

The Met also continues its commitment to bringing opera to our loyal audience even while the stage is dark. The free Nightly Opera Streams will continue through the entire closure, and we hope you’ll join us for the remainder of the groundbreaking Met Stars Live in Concert series, featuring opera’s greatest stars performing live from striking locations around the globe, transmitted via satellite in state-of-the-art HD quality. Each free livestream performance is available for a period of 23 hours, from 7:30 p.m. EDT until 6:30 p.m. the following day. The schedule will include outstanding complete performances from the past 14 years of cinema transmissions, starring all of opera’s greatest singers. (Scroll down for the next week's performances.)

As the Met will remain dark until September 2021 due to the ongoing global health crisis, the live transmissions scheduled during the 2020–21 season have been canceled. Select cinemas across the globe will screen encore presentations of past titles during this time. Please check your local cinema listings for more information.

Joan Ortega-Cowan, president/executive director of Vero Beach Opera:

"I first heard about Met closing two days ago from our Met Baritone David Pershall who is under contract for the role of Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera during their 2020-20201 Opera Season. ... David was our "Barber" in Barber of Seville and will be in our La Boheme."

Vero Beach Opera is on track for a successful 2021 season.
