The Mission of the Missouri Main Street Connection is to provide communities with the knowledge and tools to economically and physically revitalize their downtowns. 

Farm to Table Moves to Main Street

For centuries, people have rallied in the street, danced in the street and marched in the street. Today, the trend is to come together and eat in the street.

The popularity of the Farm to Table movement, or Eat in the Street as some call it, has grown the last few years. What was initially introduced in the early 2000s by chefs to promote local farms and "knowing where your food comes from" has been picked up by Main Street and downtown organizations across the country. Downtowns from the East Coast to Tennessee to even Hawaii have hosted successful meeting and eating in the street events.

Closer to home, four Missouri Main Street communities recently partnered with farms, chefs, vendors, and producers - all local to their area - to supply everything from meat, produce, dinnerware, furniture and décor to host 150-200 people.

Downtown Odessa included dancing and local awards in their first Eat in the Street event to fundraise for future downtown projects. (Check out their video and Facebook album.)

Downtown Washington Inc.  had an impressive sell out of 150 tickets in nine days for their event to fundraise for repointing of their c1856 Farmers' Market building.

Downtown Excelsior Partnership  had a wine toss and incorporated their annual awards and recognition program with their event to raise money for a mural project in Excelsior Springs.

Old Town Cape  planned and executed their Farm to Table event in only three months' time to showcase local agriculture and raise money for the Cape Riverfront Market in Cape Girardeau.

Through proper planning, diligence, and partnering with key groups and experienced individuals, all four groups reported great successes with few obstacles.

The phrase Farm to Table can mean different things to different people, but it most commonly means the food on the table came directly from the farm or farmers' market without going through a store or distributor.

For Main Street, Farm to Table means the same thing, with a twist:  It's a great event to bring the community together downtown, create awareness for a specific project, and raise a little bit of funds with the fun. 
How Does Economic Vitality Fit Your Strategy?

How important is Economic Vitality (EV) in your downtown revitalization program? How have your efforts to plan and execute an effective EV strategy turned out? 

Join Missouri Main Street in Chillicothe, Missouri, on November 11, 2016, for our fall quarterly workshop, "Economic Vitality = Results" to learn the importance of EV and how to integrate a successful strategy with the Main Street philosophy. 

Jay Schlinsog, owner and managing principal of Downtown Professionals Network, will break down the EV topic by sharing real-world examples from across the Midwest to illustrate a 3-D approach that will engage volunteers and partners. You will learn :
  • How to package the organization's worth to partners like the city, sponsors, business owners, retailers, volunteers and residents. 
  • What data needs to be collected and shared, then how to mine that data for tracking and visually demonstrating trends. 
  • How to communicate those numbers to investors or the city council. 
With Jay's 25+ years of experience in community and economic development, he will equip your organization to achieve - and celebrate - EV success.

Why Shopping Local Is a Good Idea

Supporting small businesses deserves to be part of your everyday routine. Why?

Small business is BIG!

The U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy reported that there are more than 28.8 million businesses operating in the US as of March 2016, and 99.7% of those are small businesses. 

Approximately half of small businesses survive five years or more. Most are "self-employed" and are your local coffee shop, favorite local boutique, go-to mom-and-pop deli, or local pet shop.

Why then do so many Americans overlook their local merchant and flock to chain stores without considering the smaller options? Misconceptions play a large role in shopping decisions. Customers assume that pricing will automatically be higher and variety will be less in small businesses.

In truth, vendors control pricing of most products and provide a Manufactured Suggested Retail Price that tells big box stores and small businesses the price the product should be sold at. The price may be lowered if the product doesn't sell over time or if the store has a promotional event taking place. This practice is not exclusive to big box stores. Many small merchants also offer discounts for special occasions.

A big box store is - well, bigger. That means they have more variety to offer, right? Wrong. It just means the assortment of inventory is deeper, not more diverse. Small, independent businesses stock a broader range of unique choices based on the interests of the owner and their local customers.
So,  what happens when you shop local? You:
  • Invest in your community
  • Get to know your neighbors
  • Support independent artists and craftsmen
  • Choose quality over quantity
  • Have access to an expert
  • Receive a personalized experience
  • Find unique, often one-of-a-kind, items
  • Support a family instead of a corporation
The shop small movement is more about supporting your local community, not so much about getting the best possible deal (that you've probably spent a cold night in a tent and possibly elbowed someone in the face for). According to the American Independent Business Alliance, 48 percent of each purchase at local independent businesses is re-circulated locally. Less than 14 percent of purchases at chain stores stay within the community.

Shopping local on Small Business Saturday, on any Saturday, or on any other day in between builds strong communities and develops economic and social relationships. You benefit. Your community benefits. 
My Community Matters: MMSC and USDA Partner on New Initiative

We are proud to announce our partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on our new My Community Matters initiative. Through the Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI) grant program, we hope to supply new and necessary support to the economic goals of local communities by engaging targeted rural towns in undertaking meaningful economic development projects. 

The My Community Matters initiative will provide technical training and assistance to 12 communities in rural Missouri and will focus on a variety of topics including business retention, microenterprise recruitment, and community sustainability. 

We look forward to working with Missouri communities to implement the overall goal of the program to help build capacity to support sustainable economic development. 

Why Main Street: A Decade's Worth of Investment

Donovan Rypkema of PlaceEconomics says, "There is simply no more cost-effective economic development program of any type, on any scale, anywhere in the country than Main Street."

The state of Main Streets in Missouri is healthier than ever, as the infograph below shows. Absent from the image is the impact on Main Street by volunteers. Donating 285,312 hours of service (valued at over $6 million) to the heart of their community, volunteers are who make downtown revitalization a powerful force.

Missouri Main Street Connection (MMSC) is the only organization in the state dedicated exclusively to the economic and physical revitalization of Missouri's downtown and business districts.

MMSC provides downtown development services, technical training, guidance and advocacy services to Missouri communities regardless of size, demographics or location.

Missouri Arts Council Executive Director, Michael Donovan, shared recently, "Missouri Main Street is one of the most important and consistent resources in our state. They demonstrate relevance with a practical and comprehensive state conference that strengthens and grows communities of all sizes.

Indeed, through outreach with workshops, in-community training, assessments, conferences, and consultations, MMSC serves over 124 communities in an effort to develop the sense of place, quality of life, and economic vitality in Missouri's downtowns and traditional neighborhood business districts.
