Sunday on Cultural Connection on the Air - Paulette Visceglia, president of Vero Beach Art Club talks about The Big Annex Move; Lisa McNamee has a Vero Beach Theatre Guild update.
Listen to Cultural Connection on the Air at a new time and place, Sundays at 8 a.m. on WQOL, 103.7 fm and on iHeartRadio.com.
This is the month for thinking and shopping small and local and that reminds me of a holiday season project I undertook in the holiday season one year when I was at WQCS. Every week I'd go to a non-profit's gift shop and record a short segment about offerings for holiday gift giving. As a community service, I'm taking that idea and transforming it into a digital Arts Blast feature every week until the end of the year.

With only (!) two months to go, it won't be possible to cover every gift shop in the area but I'll give it my best shot. While paid advertising is available — with discounts for non-profit gift shops — these features are unsolicited and unpaid. If you know of any eligible (501(c)3) gift shops, send the names, contact person, and email address to me at willi@willimiller.com.
Soup Bowl Maker Glenda Taylor
Continuing an Arts Blast series featuring the dedicated, talented, and generous clay artists at Indian River Clay who have been working the clay for many weeks to keep a tradition alive — meet artist Glenda Taylor.
In the artist's words:

Twenty- eight years ago I was head of the Ceramics Dept. at The Center For The Arts in Vero Beach. Two of my students, Ken Macht and Shotsi LaJoie, were board members of the Samaritan Center, and walked out of the first Soup Bowl fundraiser planning meeting deciding to make soup bowls for the event. They recruited a few potters including myself and we made over 200 bowls! They sold successfully, raising a few more dollars for the great cause. A tradition was born! Now in its 28th year, potters from Indian River County area have contributed over 30,000 handmade bowls.
I would encourage my students to take part not only because it’s a wonderful cause, but also because there are benefits to the potters as well.
Creating the same form over and over again really allows you to hone your throwing and hand building skills. Plus, the opportunity to work in community with other potters to reach a goal is lots of fun!
I love the Samaritan Center Soup Bowl for many reasons. It’s one of the few fundraisers in this community that is inclusive… for a mere $5, you can come to one of dozens of locations, enjoy a humble meal with others, and contribute to helping homeless families. This year of course will be different… there will be no soup served, but there will be plenty of soup bowls to purchase and take home.
Indian River Clay hosted the bowl making this year for the first time. I am excited to be part of such an incredible organization. IRC is the natural outgrowth of the clay programs at our Vero Beach Museum of Art… we have an expanding and thriving clay community in our area now, and a state of the art facility for studio work and classes. I joined the Board of IRC almost a year ago, and I’m very impressed with what the 501C has accomplished in its first 3 years.
I have been a potter for over 45 years, having received my BFA in Ceramics from UF. With several other artists, I owned Tiger Lily Art Studios and Gallery for 30 years. We closed this spring and I’ve moved my clay studio to my home, and am happy to have more space and my very own sink for the first time! Unlike most other types of artists, clay artists like to work with other potters, and IRC offers this opportunity. In addition to making soup bowls, I make decorative vessels and am represented by The Cheryl Newby Gallery. I have recently had several architectural commissions, and also have an address plaque business – the plaques are sold at M Maison and Etsy. See more on Facebook.
Hours are 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Heritage Center on 14th Avenue in downtown Vero Beach.

Strolling on a First Friday
November 6 will be a noteworthy day in arts districts in Arts Blast territory. In Brevard County, Melbourne's Eau Gallie Arts District is open for visitors on November's First Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Look for opening receptions at some of the galleries.

The Creek District in Stuart is having a night of fine art and auctions.

In Vero Beach, it's First Friday Gallery Stroll, with galleries and restaurants open and welcoming visitors.
Lila Blakeslee, one of the artist/owners at Gallery 14 put together a short rundown for Arts Blast of what strollers will find in the Vero Beach arts district:
Gallery 14 opened in 2007 and has been the anchor gallery in the Arts District. The eight artist/owners set a high standard with their monthly Guest Artist exhibits as well as featuring their own art. Gallery 14 was instrumental in the development of the First Friday as well as the installation of the Arts District Banners.

Artist Guild Gallery artists have been together for 30 years and moved to the Arts District in 2010. There are eleven artist/owners featured in the gallery with monthly Guest Artist exhibits. The artists also teach a variety of art classes.

Flametree Clay Art Gallery opened in 2011 and features clay art and pottery from local artists. Owned by Leah and Bruce Cady, the gallery features unique monthly exhibits that help support the community of clay artists.

Putting It Together at Riverside

Each episode you will learn how we make the magic come to life on our stages from interviews with managers from Production, Scenic, Paints, Wardrobe, Music, Lighting and Sound Departments. Each video short is about 10 minutes. The links will not expire so you can watch at anytime.

Episode 2: Learn how scenery is created for our shows

In this "Scene Shop" episode you'll see and hear from our Technical Directors describing how they turn drawings into amazing scenery for our musicals and plays.
From the Watering Hole with the the Space Coast Symphony
What would you expect a lion, the King of Africa, to do if a box of musical instruments fell off a tourist bus at his feet? That's probably a question Arts Blast readers haven't considered before now and, thanks to the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, Mendx Studios, Central Florida author Michele Wallace Campanelli, and Music at the Watering Hole, it isn't one they need to worry about ever.
The answer is a no-brainer, of course. Kojo the Lion decides to bring all of the wild animals of the Savannah together to form an orchestra. The soundtrack will include musical selections from Madagascar, Lion King, Zootopia, Jungle Book, Jurassic Park, The Croods and more, along with demonstrations of musical instruments by costumed musicians.

This family concert on film will be narrated by central Florida actor Eric Pinder.
Conductor and Artistic Director Aaron T. Collins, thinks the family concert film, Music at the Watering Hole, is a dose of much-needed positivity in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"We jumped at the chance to bring another of Michele's stories to life," said Collins. "Our family concert is all about bringing joy through the power of music-- one of our most important missions. It's especially great to know we'll be spreading happiness every time the film is seen."

Music at the Watering Hole is funded through a grant by Indian River Impact 100, an organization of women dedicated to impacting the community through transformational giving. Approximately 60-minutes in length, the film will be premiered in a free live stream event Sunday, November 8 at 3:00 p.m.  from the orchestra website. For more information, call toll free to 855-252-727
In lieu of a live event, the film will be shown to thousands of Indian River County students in grades 1-3. The free family concert on film will be made available for presentation to elementary classrooms in public, private and home schools. Other educators or institutions who wish to show the film should submit a request in writing to jennifer@SpaceCoastSymphony.org

Meet Artist Bonnie Bolton
By Warren Obluck
Bonnie Bolton: Imagination is Memory

When Bonnie Bolton was small she made sure to arrive at church early. “There was so much to see,” she remembers. “I spent a lot of time studying the stained-glass windows. I loved the colors, the shapes, the light coming through. It was beautiful. It was all very important to me, and those early emotions remain with me even today. It all comes back when I start working on a figure -- you’ll see a lot of angels in my work, guardians. I will wander away to a more playful side in my work, but I always come back to the angels.”
Bolton’s spirit-cleansing collages and assemblages will be up at the Center for Spiritual Care Nov. 7-27 by reservation (772-567-1233). Her work often depends on angel-like creatures who are unexpectedly accessible and impeccably crafted. They are balanced by others radiating an impish innocence and almost palpable joy.
“Today,” she says, “I feel so filled with things I want to create that if you stuck a pin in me I’d just go phs-sh-ht and all these ideas would come spraying out. I’ll have a conversation with someone and at the same time I can’t stop thinking about whatever it is I’m working on. I pay attention but the channel never gets turned off.
“And everywhere I go I look for things: an old ticket stub, a rusty piece of this or that, old photos. Antique pictures are really important. I treat them with great respect because we’re all going to be an old photo someday. These people seem to me in a way still alive and I’m adding meaning to their lives. When I clip faces from different photos to incorporate in a separate work, it’s as if I’m introducing all these characters to each other.”

Indeed, it’s this attitude of deference and respect that sets Bolton’s work apart. Her purpose is not merely to entertain us, although she certainly accomplishes that. Her purpose is to remind us of the mysteries that surround us -- and to have us take them seriously. Call the Center at 772-567-1233 to set up a time to see her show, “The Unbound Imagination.”
From the Elliott Museum:

The Elliott Museum has installed a very cool exhibit that will allow you to explore your creative side! The exhibit features a Makerspace Lab with eight computer stations, four 3-D printers and two die-cut machines. You can create your own animated movies and paper engineering projects, and make designs that can be sent to our in-house 3-D printers and laser cutters. Helpful docents will be on hand to introduce you to our easy-to-use technology! All of this is included with the price of museum admission.

Additionally, we welcome you to the world of animation! It’s a world that’s larger-than-life, where a picture has the power to convey a thousand words, ignite an infinite realm of imagination, and create a limitless source of smiles.

On loan from the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, this captivating exhibit is a whimsical gallery of madcap characters from six of the world’s leading animation artists.

The exhibit showcases the art of six very popular animation artists, including Carter Goodrich, character designer for Despicable Me, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Hotel Transylvania, Brave, Open Season, Coco, as well as 17 New Yorker magazine covers (and counting).

We are offering a million heartfelt thanks to Janeen Mason, curator of the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, Florida, for creating this magnificent exhibit, and sharing it with Martin County families. Janeen is one of the absolute shining stars of the art scene in Florida, and we are thrilled to be enjoying her talents and her beautiful heart!

Mason sent this information about the on-loan exhibit to Arts Blast:

The artwork:
“A Hollywood blockbuster character designer headlines this exhibition of character artists and concept originators. Carter Goodrich brought us Despicable Me, The CROODS, Finding Nemo, Brave, and more. Come for the inspiration, stay for the fun!”

The MakerSpace:
“Join the legions of tinkerers around the world and get creative in the MakerSpace at the Elliott Museum.
Guests of all ages learn to animate short videos, create paper-engineered projects, design objects to print on our 3D printers, and even design and fabricate dynamic puppets.”

More on the art:
Concept originators and character designers employ their superpowers by defining the visual details that convey the strength of the personalities and invoke the wonder of the realms they invient. With the stroke of a pencil, they can make our hearts beat a little faster and our hair stand on end.

More on the MakerSpace:
The MakerSpace on loan from the Lighthouse ArtCenter is a collaborate workspace for making, learning, exploring and sharing. The Elliott Museum invites kids and adults to engage with our staff and interns while tinkering with a variety of equipment and supplies, from 3D printing, animation, paper engineering, and dynamic character design.

This exhibition and MakerSpace is sponsored by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation.
Music at First Pres

The Music and Arts Department at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach is kicking off the season with two concerts in November. On the 8th, three familiar men of music, Jacob Craig, Matt Stott, and Mark Shuping, wiill take the stage in the sanctuary at the church for a concert of familiar works for strings and piano.
Craig, who heads the Music and Arts program at First Pres, said the program is a piano trio concert, meaning all three musicians will be performing together the entire time.

Before accepting his current position at King's Baptist Church, Stott was the frequently honored orchestra director at Vero Beach High School, where he served for almost 20 years. Shuping, with degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Boston University, stepped into that slot in 2019.
Craig has done extensive post-graduate work, and last year earned his Doctorate of Sacred Music in Performance at the Graduate Theological Foundation and Oxford University.

The Nov. 8 concert is at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary. Admission is free, although a $10 donation is suggested. A "Thank You" concert is scheduled at the church Nov. 22.

More music next week:

Ryan Kasten, the director of music and organist at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, has prepared a Nov. 10 concert to benefit the Veterans Council of Indian River Council. It brings together Kasten and the St. John's Brass for a celebration of "our Veterans past and present, and will kick off the Veterans Day celebrations in Indian River county," Kasten said.

The concert of all patriotic music is in the main church of St. John of the Cross, which seats 1200. Veterans and active military personnel are encouraged to dress in their uniforms. Admission is free and social distancing and masks are recommended. The concert will also be live streamed on the St. John of the Cross Facebook page.
