"Aging Optimally, " by the

MOA's Dr. Carol Monson

Over the past 125 years(?!) the Michigan Osteopathic Association has has been fortunate to have a so many leaders who's work inspired the following generation. Carol Manson, DO, is the quintessential example. She has served as President of the MOA, has been a leader in education on many levels. And now, Dr. Monson is sharing her knowledge on aging with others in the form of her first book.

"Aging Optimally: Essential Tools For Healing Pain of Body, Mind, and Spirit," is written for people who want to learn how to change their life positively by using tools that are less known or unfamiliar.

"I wrote this book to inspire people to become 'the best they can be,' live longer and healthier lives, and become happier along the way. Osteopathic Principles and Practices have always emphasized holistic care of body, mind, and spirit. They are integral to aging and health in my own life; now, I want to share them widely with other people in our changing world,' said Dr. Monson.

"Aging Optimally," is available through Dr. Monson's website—www.agingoptimally.org, where there is a Workbook available for download, or go directly to Amazon– Aging Optimally.

MDHHS launches OpiRescue smartphone app to help Michigan residents prevent and reduce opioid overdoses

LANSING, Mich. – In an effort to reduce the occurrence of overdoses and help residents learn to treat an overdose, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is launching OpiRescue, a smartphone app aimed at reducing harm.

The OpiRescue app helps anyone, including first responders, prevent opioid misuse and reduce opioid overdose deaths by addressing education, prevention and tracking of overdose reversals.

“Preventing opioid deaths includes offering a variety of strategies to provide residents tools when and where they need them,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, MDHHS chief medical executive. “The OpiRescue app will support those who may encounter an overdose to immediately begin life-saving treatment to an affected individual.”

The OpiRescue app provides:

·         Educational content to identify and reverse overdoses.

·         A Naloxone finder to locate the medication nearby.

·         A treatment locator.

·         Information on how to report an overdose reversal.

The OpiRescue app is available statewide in Michigan on both Android and iOS platforms. It is free to use and anonymous. It can be downloaded at Apple iOS app store or through Google Play

MDHHS partners, including Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans and Syringe Service Programs, actively involved in caring for members of the public experiencing opioid use disorder will have access to a dashboard for their region. The dashboard will allow those partners to view overdose reversal data in near real time and allocate additional resources as needed to areas with increased reports of overdose reversals.

For more information on Naloxone and how to obtain the medication, visit Michigan.gov/Naloxone

Public Health Emergency (PHE) Unwinding

MDHHS has issued many COVID-19 response Medicaid policy bulletins and L letters which changed existing policy and processes under the guidance of the federal PHE. Many COVID-19 response policy bulletins and L letters are intended to be time-limited, and MDHHS will notify providers of their termination.

In preparation for the end of the federal PHE, we encourage providers to take the following steps:

  • Review the Medicaid policy bulletin and L letter webpages to see which policies or L letters may impact your provider type.
  • Verify beneficiary eligibility prior to services. Providers can visit the Eligibility and Enrollment webpage for step-by-step instructions.
  • Remind beneficiaries to verify or update their contact information, or report any changes, online through MI Bridges. They can also call their local MDHHS office for help. Local office information can be found on MDHHS County Office webpage
  • Remind beneficiaries to open mail from MDHHS, and complete and return renewal documents.

Providers may e-mail ProviderSupport@michigan.gov with questions.

What will happen to the policies that will change or end as part of the PHE?

Policies that will change or end a COVID-19 Response policy will be fully promulgated, which includes a 35-day public comment period and issuance of a final bulletin at least 30 days before the effective date of the policy change. Beneficiaries will be provided with timely and adequate notice of the ending or reduction of any COVID-19 Response service or process.

How can our office stay up to date to ensure we aren’t missing policy changes?
