A Note from JACO Board Chair Catherine Ballard

I have always loved the following passage from one of Carl Jung's writings. He says: “I have always been impressed by the fact that there are surprisingly many individuals who never use their minds if they can avoid it, and yet are not stupid, and an equal number who obviously do use their minds

but in an amazingly stupid way.”

I have always felt much better when he completed the thought by explaining this is how he began to recognize types: “What I am trying to convey … is the first glimpse of the impressions I received when I began to observe the many people I met. It soon became clear to me that the people who used their minds were those who thought, who employed their intellectual faculty in trying to adapt to people and circumstances, and that the equally intelligent people, who yet did not think, were those who sought and found their way by feeling.” CG Jung, “The Undiscovered Self with Symbols and the Interpretation of Dreams.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

In addition to continuing Saturday Conversations (we are working on having our next one in early summer), we are working on a few exciting ideas (in addition to our Bollingen Conference) and should be ready to share them next month. Until then, we hope you enjoy soaking up the beauty of Spring—windy storms, brilliant sunshine, rainy days, crazy temperatures, blue skies—the joy and wonder of living in Ohio.

Book Club

"Man & His Symbols, The Process of Individuation"

Starting April 26, 2026 (and every 2 weeks thereafter until done)

4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

By Zoom only

A reminder that we will begin our journey of “The Process of Individuation,” Chapter 3 of Jung’s Book “Man & His Symbols.” There is much to ponder in this chapter and so we will have several “leaders” to take us through Dr. Marie Louise von Franz’s Path to Individuation. Mike Schaefer will begin our journey, followed by Catherine Ballard, and wrapped up by Stephen Weed.

As stated by Von Franz:

“The individuation process is more than a coming to terms between the inborn germ of wholeness and the outer act of fate. Its subjective experience conveys the feeling that some supra-personal force is actively interfering in a creative way. One sometimes feels that the unconscious is leading the way in accordance with a secret design. It is as if something is looking at me, something that I do not see but that sees me…”

Book Club is always free, but you need to register so that we can send you the link.

And a Thank You

A huge thank you to all who attended our March Bauza Lecture with Dr. Michelle Rivera-Clonch.

We hope you found it enlightening and helpful. The history of the peace symbol and how it evolved from the “Nuclear Disarmament” protest sign to a symbol that is known throughout the world as a concept and call to action for peace was fascinating. And the afternoon workshop brought the external hope for peace into an internal practical approach to finding it in our own lives.
