The Family Journey; A Newsletter

The goal, as always, with the newsletter is to spark discussion, thoughtfulness and insight. By no means do we pretend that we are experts on many of the subject we present articles on, in fact most times we share pieces which we have found allow us to learn, ask ourselves questions and grow. The newsletter is shared with friends, past clients, schools, treatment programs and colleagues, but as many of you know most of you fit in multiple categories! We encourage you to spend a few minutes and challenge yourselves to read, learn discuss and share. It is only through honest self-reflection and and insight that we, societally, can grow and learn. Enjoy!

A New Treatment for Childhood Anxiety

A tiny daily dose of independence turns out to be the best remedy.

Childhood anxiety has been on the rise. Our instinct as parents is often to get more involved. But what if that’s part of the problem?

In 2023, almost 40% of high school students reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, 28.5% reported poor mental health, 20.4% said they had seriously considered attempting suicide, and 9.5% reported having attempted suicide. Suicide rates for 10- to 24-year-olds increased by 62% from 2007 to 2021.

A few excerpts form this very powerful and thought provoking Ted Talk

So what do we do? Big system-level changes are needed to fix this, no question. But we're not powerless. If you're worried about youth mental health, build their resilience. Listen, provide support. Help them learn

that feelings and failures are a normal part of adolescence. Because they're a normal part of life.

We are all in this together. That means we have to stop doom-shaming young people. If we keep saying this generation is being destroyed, how can we expect them to believe in their own potential?

Everyone goes about life differently. Sometimes we get so consumed in how we do things we forget that there are many paths to awareness. We should all try to remember that everyone is on their own journey doing the best they can.
