The Message this Week

Preaching Text: Revelation 13:1-18 

Lions and bears and leopards, oh my! In our reading from Revelation for this week, we have depictions of two beasts; one from the sea and one from the land. When you look at the global situation of the time, the Romans would send authorities to the far reaches of their empire, by sea and by land. John’s coded language is naming the empire "the beast". The challenge for us is to pull these images and this history out of its context and into ours. What is most dangerous for the saints in our modern life?

Good and gracious God, it can be hard to find You in the midst of things we can’t understand…whether it is a challenging passage of the Bible or understanding things that are happening in our lives or in the world. And yet, You are with us. Help us to see the signs of Your work in the world around us and join as we are able. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I keep hearing that there are messages of hope in Revelation… what if I’m just not feeling hopeful?

• Lord God, you show us that despite the evil in the world, we follow one who is far more powerful. Teach us to follow the ways of justice, peace, goodness, and love.
• Show us how to care for the earth, and the plants, animals, and people who live on it. Help us not to destroy, but to heal.
• Walk with students who are soon beginning a new school year. Bless teachers, administrators, and all who work in our educational systems as they educate, nurture, and love our kids.
• Spread your healing wings over all who are in need of your love and care. Lessen pain, lower fear, and heal bodies, minds, and souls, especially Erin Loris, dear friend of the Abrahamson family.
• To those who see your face, and who bear your name on their foreheads, we give thanks and long for our final and perfect communion within your holy family, in our forever home.
• We surround with our prayers the family of Earl Lamp who died Monday, August 18.

All things exist in and through you, loving God. Therefore we entrust our prayers, our faith, and our lives to you, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Welcome to a new year of middle school ministry (aka Confirmation)!  We are excited to offer opportunities to grow in faith, serve and build relationships in middle school ministry this year. We will be preparing dinner for 80 people at Holy Trinity Soup Kettle in Elgin on Sunday, August 31. We will prepare the meal between services.
