Live Nativity at the Friary will place this Sunday, December 17, 2023.
Immediately after Mass this Sunday, everyone is invited to join us at our Christmas Caroling outreach around the neighborhood. Our final stop would be at the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal friary on 13th Ave. to participate in the Live Nativity Play, the joyful and exciting story about the birth of Jesus, featuring some live animals, such as some llamas, sheep, goats and and donkeys. This is a beautiful way to witness to the neighborhood that Jesus is the reason for the season! During our caroling, we will hand out invitations for the nativity play.
Our Giving Tree gifts will be distributed during this time.
The deadline for our Giving Tree has been extended until tomorrow, Dec 16. You may bring your gifts to the Rectory .

This Sunday is the 3rd Sunday of Advent:
Reflections on the Third Sunday of Advent: Rejoice!
The Prophet Isaiah gives us the theme for reflection today: "In my God is the joy of my soul." When that is true in our lives, we are walking the road and we know the truth of these words from the same Prophet: "He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord."
In many ways we can see this as the 'mission statement' of Jesus as he began his Galilean ministry using this reference from Isaiah in the synagogue of his hometown of Nazareth. What joy is brought to those weighed down by poverty, those who are broken-hearted, those imprisoned in selfishness and sin! Jesus brings the favor and blessing of God to those who seek it. As followers of Jesus ours is an invitation to share that 'mission statement' in our Church today. In a special way today is the call to help anyone brought low by the pain of this global virus.
On this 'Gaudete Sunday' we are called to celebrate with joy. It is a Sunday of rejoicing. The entrance song for some centuries was always from the Letter to the Philippians: Rejoice in the Lord always! Again, I say, rejoice. Looking at 2023 so far you might rightly say: can we really REJOICE this year? We see extremism in our political and religious debate. We witness conflict, hatred and rejection across the globe that belittles and hurts millions. Can we really rejoice this year? How do bring light to the poor, the broken-hearted and those imprisoned? Can I honestly be joyful today?
The honest answer, as followers of a God of joy, is that we should rejoice. We are called, especially on this day, to be a sign of contradiction, to be counter-cultural—just as the prophets were through history. It means that we must stay positive during these days, even though it might so difficult. Our positivity might be just the antidote that our family and friends need at this time. Like John the Baptist we are called to point to a better way, a way that brings life. As we light yet another candle on our wreath, let it be symbolic of our growing acceptance of this way of peace and joy.

As you know, brothers and sisters, we are in a constant battle to focus on Jesus at the time of Advent due to the commercialization of Christmas.
This is why I encourage all families to gather together and plan on your own "Family Journey to the Manger".
Here are some examples of Advent family time:
- Get an Advent Wreath and light the candles during your meal time together. You can order from https://www.autom.com or from Amazon . (May this Advent be the beginning of Family Meal Time, which means actually sitting together at the same table and praying Grace before meals!) At this time of Advent, light the specific Advent candles, while praying Grace and reading Advent prayers ( Click here for the prayers).
- Eucharistic Adoration and/or a daily Mass once each week. Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel is open for Adoration Tuesday thru Saturday, from
9am to 8pm. Call the office for more information.
- Divine Mercy Chaplet daily or at least once a week.
- Outreach to the poor. (Refer to our Giving Tree and Caroling Outreach above)
- Last week's Advent Retreat was a blessing to those who came. Tomorrow, the young adults will have their own encounter, "Break Revival Event. This is a wonderful opportunity for our young adults. Don't miss out! (see flyer above)

This is a powerful teaching for every Catholic. Watch it!
Ralph Martin - "WHO is Really Present in the Holy Eucharist?"
We are in the midst of an effort to renew faith in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. While that is very important, we need to ask some additional questions. Who is really present? What does he want?

WHO is Really Present in the Holy Eucharist- Part 2
Fr. Joseph recently gave this homily (Dec 12, 2023 ) during the Funeral Mass of Sandy Condron. It is an inspirational teaching on the example for all of us of Sandy's life in her journey with Jesus, whom she knew and loved with her very last breath.
