AS WE GATHER

The seven Sundays of Easter celebrate the greatest of all victories—the defeat of sin, death, and the devil by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The theme of victory fills each of the Sundays of Easter and radiates out the joy of the first Easter morning week by week. One Easter hymnwriter exhorts: “Let hymns of praise His triumph tell” ( LSB 464:4). There is so much to be sung and to be told about the victory of Jesus, our Lord—and we are the ones gifted with the opportunity to do the singing and the telling in our generation.

He broke the age-bound chains of hell;
The bars from heav’n’s high portal fell.
Let hymns of praise His triumph tell.”
Alleluia!
INVOCATION
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES Romans 6:9; Matthew 28:7; Hebrews 2:7; Psalm 8:6, adapted

Christ being raised from the dead will never die again;
death no longer has dominion over Him.
Christ has risen from the dead. Alleluia!
God the Father has crowned Him with glory and honor,
He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands;
He has put all things under His feet. Alleluia! Alleluia!

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Let us confess our sin to God, our merciful Father.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our creator and preserver, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We are stained by sin from our very beginnings. We have sinned again and again in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves and have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for all of our many sins. Have mercy on us, gracious Father; forgive us all that is past, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, direct our lives so that we serve You in true faithfulness. Grant us victory over all that oppresses us, and build Your kingdom among us here through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE “In Thee Is Gladness”                       LSB 818
PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up the fallen world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God,
     the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth
          and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
     the only-begotten Son of God,
     begotten of His Father before all worlds,
     God of God, Light of Light,
     very God of very God,
     begotten, not made,
     being of one substance with the Father,
     by whom all things were made;
     who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
     and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
     and was made man;
     and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
     He suffered and was buried.
     And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
          and ascended into heaven
     and sits at the right hand of the Father.
     And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
     whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the Lord and giver of life,
     who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
     who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
     who spoke by the prophets.
     And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
     I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
     and I look for the resurrection of the dead
     and the life + of the world to come. Amen.
HYMN OF THE DAY “Alleluia! Let Praises Ring”          LSB 822
(Lyrics to the hymn are below.)
Alleluia! Let praises ring!
To God the Father let us bring
    Our songs of adoration.
To Him through everlasting days
Be worship, honor, pow’r, and praise,
    Whose hand sustains creation.
        Singing, ringing:
    Holy, holy,
    God is holy;
        Spread the story
Of our God, the Lord of glory.

Alleluia! Let praises ring!
Unto the Lamb of God we sing,
    In whom we are elected.
He bought His Church with His own blood,
He cleansed her in that blessèd flood,
    And as His bride selected.
        Holy, holy
    Is our union
    And communion.
        His befriending
Gives us joy and peace unending.

Alleluia! Let praises ring!
Unto the Holy Ghost we sing
    For our regeneration.
The saving faith in us He wrought
And us unto the Bridegroom brought,
    Made us His chosen nation.
        Glory! Glory!
    Joy eternal,
    Bliss supernal;
        There is manna
And an endless, glad hosanna.

Alleluia! Let praises ring!
Unto our triune God we sing;
    Blest be His name forever!
With angel hosts let us adore
And sing His praises evermore
    For all His grace and favor!
        Singing, ringing:
    Holy, holy,
    God is holy;
        Spread the story
Of our God, the Lord of glory!

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

We pray for the whole Church, that the message of salvation joyfully be told throughout all the world and the Easter victory of Jesus Christ be celebrated around the globe.

We pray for the nations of the world, that the governments of all nations be a source of blessing to those who are governed and that oppression in all forms be hindered.

We pray for ourselves in this season of our Lord’s great victory, that we truly be Easter people all year long, radiating the light of Christ in our homes, workplaces, and communities.

We pray for all who serve us through their callings, especially for those who deal with special challenges or dangers on a regular basis, including police, fire, and emergency personnel. Also, we remember at this time the military forces of our nation, those stationed both at home and abroad, whose efforts serve to defend our nation in challenging times.

We pray for those with special concerns and needs this day: those who are hospitalized, [ including those on the prayer list ], those who grieve, the unemployed and underemployed, the chronically ill and shut-in, and all others whose needs are not known to us at this time. Bless them with Your presence, gracious Father, that they have a sense of victory in their lives and find strength and hope for each day.

We pray for all those cry out in in great distress, who now endure affliction because of the Coronavirus that they receive healing and comfort. We pray for all who work to bring rescue and relief, that they be upheld in their life saving work; and we pray for all those who are suffering economic stress and anxiety that they find relief and the assurance of Your love. Help all of us to find ways to bring aid and comfort to those who are suffering emotionally so that they may find renewed hope and purpose;

Merciful God, we bless You for having placed into our lives faithful Christian people to guide us. On this day we remember those no longer among us on earth who have completed their earthly races and have won the final victory in Christ. Lead us to follow in their way, that we rejoice together eternally at Your Table and in Your mansions. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be Thy name,
     Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth
          as it is in heaven;
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses
          as we forgive those
          who trespass against us;
     and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
     and the power and the glory
     forever and ever. Amen.
The Benediction
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look on you with favor and give you + peace. Amen.
