Watch our talk with Dr. Edwin Lyman

During our First Friday webinar Feb. 3, a safety expert presented a sobering assessment of security Southern California Edison's nuclear waste dump at San Onofre.

Edison's protection of the 3.6 million pounds of deadly waste is inadequate, said Dr. Edwin Lyman, Director of Nuclear Power Safety for the Union of Concerned Scientists, in large part because the storage facility is located so close to publicly-accessible beaches, parkland and roads.

Lyman argued for beefed up physical barriers, surveillance, intrusion detection and response.

We appreciate Dr. Lyman's participation and that of our moderator, Dr. Peter Andersen.

GROUPS CHALLENGE DIABLO CANYON LICENSING

In Central California, environmental groups filed a petition Feb. 13 to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission demanding the closure of Diablo Canyon Power Plant's nuclear reactors in 2024 and 2025, as originally scheduled.

The petitioners — San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, Friends of the Earth and the Environmental Working Group — insist that the NRC complete an environmental review before approving the license extensions.

OPEN DOOR FOR ART

Our Open Door For Art program gets kids excited about performing arts by arranging for groups to attend professional music and dance concerts. This month, we hosted 80 children to attend the Grand American Ballet's "I Love To Love You, Valentine!" performance at the Balboa Theatre.

BARRIO BOTANY

Smiles, fascination and outdoor learning add to the harvest at Sherman Elementary. We are proud to support Barrio Botany, a group that runs urban school gardens and food justice programs in San Diego.
