SAFETY SPOTLIGHT

Safety Spotlight

Summer is in full swing, and families across the nation are hitting the road for vacations, creating fuller roads with less cautious drivers. Whether you’re driving your BIG RIG cross-country, or hauling goods on a shorter route, American families will be traveling this July and August as they do every year, so it’s important to STAY ALERT. Here a few tips for trucking in the summer as you continue to work hard while others are on vacation:

  1. More drivers on the roads: Watch out for highways packed with drivers of all ages. Teenagers go on trips, families go on vacations, people take days off work and there are more people on the road than in any other season. This creates hazardous roads for truck drivers. Drivers can become more distracted, fatigued, or make poor choices while driving long distances.
  2. Eat healthy: Fresh fruit, yogurt, and cold water are great snacks to pack with you on the road. Not only are these foods healthy but they are refreshing during the summer months.
  3. Stay hydrated and out of the sun: The driver’s side window heats up, and although it can feel nice there is a thing known as “Trucker’s Arm”. Truckers often get an awkward tan that occurs from a driver only getting sun to the left arm. Using sunscreen, window covers or just wearing long sleeves can help to protect yourself from dangerous rays from the sun.
  4. Beware of the weather: Summer weather can change drastically with no notice. Be aware of what kind of weather is up ahead and what could be coming to the area, use apps on your phone or the local radio station to keep informed.
  5. Check your tires often: Under-inflated tires will wear quicker in the heat and can be hazardous to your driving. The combination of heat and under-inflation can drastically increase the chances of a blowout, so check your tire pressure.
  6. Be aware of heat exhaustion or heat stroke: If you feel dizzy or nauseous while driving it would be smart to pull over and rest in a safe place away from traffic. Exercising outside or driving without air conditioning in warm weather can increase your risk.

Truck drivers are delivering goods that fuel the economy, stock the shelves at local stores, and fill the pantries of every family in the United States. The trucking industry impacts the daily lives of Americans in more ways than anyone can imagine. Truck drivers operate much larger, heavier vehicles than others they share the road with, and have a higher degree of responsiveness. It’s important to drive wise and stay extra alert during the summer months. Do it for you; Do it for your family. Enjoy the July 4th Holiday!

LEGISLATIVE REPORT

Dale Allen

Adams and Reese LLP

Ashley Harbin,

Laws Taking Effect July 1, 2023

On July 1, a slate of new laws will go into effect in Tennessee. Legislation with specific importance to the industry include two bills highlighted below.

Public Chapter 39 (SB210/HB180). This legislation, sponsored by TTA, will add an additional 2,000 lb. variance on tractor trailers that are operated by electric motors and powered by electric batteries. This is currently allowed on all federal highways but needs to be extended to state highways. This is the exact variance currently allowed for tractor trailers that are operated by natural gas.

Public Chapter 229 (SB1337/HB87). This legislation was sponsored by TTA, working in conjunction with other groups, in an effort to tighten up additional notice provisions for the towing of vehicles on private property to line up with the requirements for public property tows.

Revising the state towing statute is an ongoing process. The statutes are extremely antiquated and were first enacted as far back as 1938. In the near future, we suspect some type of overall modernization of these towing statutes will be seriously considered. Please note, one section of the legislation takes effect July 1, 2023. All other remaining sections went into effect upon becoming law, April 25, 2023.

Road Team Captains on The Move

School may be out for summer, but the Tennessee Road Team Captains are still on the move. Here's a look at what they've been up to since our last newsletter!

On June 16, Captains Rick Bennett (FedEx Freight) and Todd Darnell (Big G Express) visited the Girls, Inc. Center in Chattanooga, TN for a Touch-A-Truck event!

Captains Tim Blair (FedEx Freight), Josh Johnson (Titan Transfer), and Rick Bennett (FedEx Freight) shared our safety message at the American Truck Historical Society Truck Show on June 17 in Crossville, TN!

Our Captains John Lemmons (UPS), Jeff Coffey (Old Dominion), Steve Marlow (ABF), Eddie LeSueur (Skyline), Cyndi Sliger (Old Dominion), and Tim Blair (FedEx Freight) did an amazing job conducting a CarFit event at the Roane County Senior Center on June 20!

Also on June 20, Captains David Brady (Old Dominion) and Don Boone (FedEx Freight) visited the Avondale and John A Patten Centers in Chattanooga to read our Papa Doug Hauls Strawberries and Smiles book and give the children a chance to see what it is like in the seat of a big truck!

Captains John Tetreault (Averitt), Paula Harper (FedEx Freight), Kevin Carter (FedEx Freight), Robert Pardee (Old Dominion), and Tim Chelette (Big G Express) had the best time at the Montgomery County Teen Driver Safety Awareness Day on June 22! At this event, students were able to walk the line with our Fatal Vision intoxication goggles, go through our pedal kart course, and learn about the trucking industry while seeing what it is like to view the road from behind the wheel of a tractor trailer.

The next day on June 23, our No Zone Trailer and Captains Pete Lovan (Titan Transfer), Kevin Carter (FedEx Freight), Rick Bennett (FedEx Freight), Paula Harper (FedEx Freight), and John Tetreault (Averitt) traveled to Lebanon for the Rule the Road event! Teen drivers learned about many different aspects of safety and we were glad to be a part of it!

Back in Chattanooga on June 26 at the Chris Ramsey Center, Captains Jeff Coffey (Old Dominion) and John Lemmons (UPS) gave the kids a fun-filled day of what it is like to be in a big truck!

The last event for June was on June 29 at the South Chattanooga Center where Captains Paula Harper (FedEx Freight) and Pete Lovan (Titan Transfer) shared with kids to stay out of the No Zone!
