July is Canada's month - when we share our joy in being Canadians with millions across the country. It's the month for red flags and red hearts, events, concerts, and fireworks. It's also the month when we pay gratitude to our identity as Canadians and the support and benefits that come along with it. This year, in particular, is a time to reflect and acknowledge the need to create a space for all voices, and to listen and learn.
Canadians are shocked by the recent discoveries of unmarked indigenous graves in Western Canada. Standing in solidarity with the stewards and caretakers of Turtle Island, and as an acknowledgement of the grief of the Indigenous local population, Markham Arts Council has joined hands with several other organizations to cancel our Virtual Canada Day concert series broadcast.
Instead, we will broadcast an episode later this summer featuring a local Indigenous artist and exploring the theme of what it truly means to be a Canadian. - STAY TUNED
