Week of October 8-12, 2018
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents with teachers.”
Dear Southern Door Community
As we complete the first half of the marking period, ensuring that routines are established and the foundation for strong relationships built with our students continue to be our priorities every day. The research strongly supports that building relationships and engaging our students impact their confidence and ability to grow. As part of their evaluation process, teachers survey their students to get a feel of how the year has started. The information gained can be very helpful in personalizing the instruction we bring to “this year’s” group of students.
Those relationships are huge, with you as our families and the community as well. We are always open to your insights about what we could do better, and of course, your appreciations of what is working well. Together it is this collaborative effort on behalf of our students that ultimately contributes greatly to the success of Southern Door students and the opportunities that are provided. We encourage your involvement in our schools, whether as a parent, community volunteer, or a school-business partner.
We also encourage your becoming informed about our district's educational needs. Please consider attending one of the district's upcoming referendum open houses at school, or a presentation at your local town or village meeting in October.
Each conversation we have with a student, a colleague, a parent or a community member contributes toward our goal of being a school that “engages and empowers” others, helps all students achieve , and provides a safe place for students and staff to learn and grow.

Together We Are Eagle Strong!

HAUNTED MANSION OPENS - WE NEED VOLUNTEERS The Haunted Mansion returns for its 13th season and opening night is this Friday, October 5! Open every Friday and Saturday night in October, The Haunted Mansion supports K-12 student programming at Southern Door. Over the past 12 years, nearly $270,000 has been donated to support student groups, clubs and activities related to academics, arts and athletics. This would NOT be possible without dedicated volunteers; over 100 needed every night (parking, security, box office, corn maze, trail, bus ride, actors, make-up artists, concessions, paintball, etc). If you are interested in volunteering this year, please contact elementary school principal, Mr. Vandertie, cvandertie@southerndoor.k12.wi.us . Volunteers 12 years old and younger, must have an adult volunteer work with them any night of operation. Calendars, waivers and the training video can be viewed in the volunteer folder at hauntedmansionsoutherndoor.com
TWO HOST FAMILIES NEEDED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Southern Door has two exchange students that would like to attend Southern Door for this school year: a girl from New Zealand and a boy from Finland. You do not need to have high school students or live in Southern Door to host an exchange student.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about other cultures and for these exchange students to experience an American high school. If you or anyone else you know is interested, please contact Karen M. Mueller, Regional Director at 414 803-9903 or email kfunkym3@gmail.com .
FREE PROGRAM October 11 at 7p
In partnership with Write On Door County, Southern Door auditorium hosts US Poet Laureate Tracy K Smith at 7p on Thursday, October 11. Go to this link to reserve a FREE seat.
TEEN READ WEEK is aimed at teens, parents, librarians, educators, and booksellers. This year's theme is "It's Written in the Stars - Read!" Although teens realize reading is important, they have a list of activities to choose from when deciding how to spend their free time, and reading sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. Teen Read Week encourages teens to read a variety of books, magazines, graphic novels, and other materials for fun. Celebrate Teen Reading Week by asking your teen what they are reading for fun these days!

HELP SUPPORT THE ELEMENTARY STEAM PROGRAM
Students in grades K-5 are becoming great problem-solvers and are excited about having STEAM class once a week (or as one little tyke said, “Smoke” class). The students need tools to help them easily work with wood and cardboard. The Makedo Cardboard Construction Toolset, Crop-a-dile, and Craft Easy Cutter (will allow students to independently manipulate cardboard and wood for their engineering. Go to this Donors Choose link to learn more about how you can help!
