Waterloo store discontinuing prepaid card program
Hansen's Dairy Waterloo will be discontinuing the use of the prepaid card program on Dec. 31, 2021.

The prepaid card program began as a membership program, where members would get discounts on milk and other Hansen's Dairy products. However, in 2017, we removed the discount for using the card and made the discounted price the actual shelf price for all customers. This was out of necessity to match with the Cedar Falls store, as we had to use a new point-of-sale system there to allow gas station pay-at-the-pump purchases.

Now our point-of-sale system in Waterloo will undergo an upgrade, and the prepaid program will not be feasible anymore. Waterloo customers will still be able to use up any money on their card, but will not be allowed to reload any money onto the card, effective immediately. Any unused funds on the card as of Dec. 31 may be cashed out and returned to the customer.

Thank you for your understanding.
Customer of the Month
The July Customer of the Month is Rafael Marrero of Cedar Falls.

Ralph has been visiting Hansen's Dairy Cedar Falls since it opened in 2007.

"Not only do I like the quality and freshness of your products, but it's always a delight to be greeted by your friendly and knowledgeable employees," he said.

His favorites are skim milk, chocolate milk and the variety of cheeses. "Especially your cheese curds and the smoked string cheese," he added.

Ralph continues shopping with us for the great prices, great flavors and great variety. "It's the best place around!" he said.

Thanks, Ralph! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $30 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
Sometimes, just for fun, we pick out a cow that may not be considered a logical choice for the Cow of the Month honor. So here is July's pick: Ethernet.

Ethernet is 4 years old and has had two calves: a bull and a heifer we named Ebay. She's an above-average milk producer and has high fat and protein components. Those are the good things about her.

Now for the bad: She is a bit of a troublemaker in the milking parlor. She has a personality and look to her that most farmers would not want to deal with. In fact, herd manager Blake Hansen says she looks — and acts — like a bull! She likes to kick, and the milking machine sometimes falls off. If you visit on a tour, you will definitely not be given the chance to milk her.

Well, here's hoping that being chosen for Cow of the Month will encourage her to straighten up. We'll consider this accolade a little positive reinforcement. :)
Cooking with Hansen's
Here's a quick, simple recipe packed with local flavor you can easily whip up and use for your holiday gatherings or for a meal when you're crunched for time. Not a Pepper Jack fan? Just swap it out for Colby, Mozzarella, or creamy Butterkaese, also available at Hansen's Dairy stores. You could also add a few leaves of fresh basil for an additional pop of flavor.

Pepper Jack Bruschetta
Prep time: 5 min
Bake time: 10-15 min
Total time: 15-20 minutes
Servings: 6-8 (2-3 pieces each)
  • 4 slices Rustic Hearth Multi Grain Bread*
  • Pepper jack cheese* (enough for thin slices to cover bread slices)
  • 1 tomato**
  • Hansen's Dairy Butter*

*Items that can be purchased at Hansen’s Dairy Stores
**Items that can be purchased at Hansen’s Dairy Stores in season
  • Preheat oven to 425 F.
  • Butter 1 side of each slice of bread and place butter side up on parchment-lined cookie sheet.
  • Cut cheese into thin slices. Place cheese slices on top of bread, covering the bread. (I used 4 square slices per slice of bread.)
  • Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • While bread is in the oven, chop tomato into 1/4- or 1/2-inch size chunks. Press tomato chunks between paper towels to remove excess moisture (don't be afraid to press firmly).
  • Remove bread from the oven.
  • Sprinkle with chopped tomatoes and return to oven for another 5 minutes or until bruschetta is nicely toasted.
  • Cut into quarters and enjoy!
