North San Antonio Chamber Members and Partners,

The future of San Antonio's City Council is up to voters at the upcoming June 5th City Council Run-off. The North SA Chamber is partnering with the Hispanic, South, and West Chambers of Commerce to host a virtual City Council Runoff Forum on Friday, May 21. This virtual FaceBook Live forum is a chance to hear from those vying for a seat in Council Districts 1,2,3,5 and 9. Although we do not endorse any candidates, our hope is that hearing from the candidates will be an opportunity to determine future elected leaders willing to foster and support businesses and their efforts to enhance the San Antonio community.

Schedule:
9:30 AM - District 1 Roberto Trevino & Mario Bravo
11:00 AM - District 2 Jada Andrews Sullivan & Jalen McKee Rodriguez (not participating)
1:00 PM - District 3 Phyllis Viagran & Tomas Uresti
2:30 PM - District 5 Rudy Lopez & Teri Castillo
4:00 PM - District 9 John Courage & Patrick Von Dohlen

Governor Abbott announced the end to federal pandemic-related unemployment benefits earlier this week, which goes into effect on June 26, 2021. According to Texas Workforce Commission, there are about 60% more open jobs in Texas now than there were in February 2020. Since the number of job openings exceeds the number of Texans looking for employment, Governor Abbott has opted Texas out of the Relief for Workers Affected by Coronavirus Act. As a pro-business entity, we must help shift the state's efforts from providing unemployment benefits to helping fill workforce gaps in San Antonio.

To help fill workforce gaps, SA Works is hosting a virtual Mind the Map panel, "Policies and Possibilities," on May 27th. AJ Rodriguez, Texas 2036 Executive Vice President, and Harry Holzer, Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, will engage in a conversation moderated by Romanita Matta-Barrera. This conversation will cover state and federal policies and funding being proposed in support of upskilling dislocated workers, and ensuring a skilled workforce needed to meet industry needs to propel economic competitiveness.
