This Is What We Can Do

Hello, Friends-

It’s a tough time. A lot of people are hurting or feeling unsafe.

For many folks, hope in these turbulent times seems like a stretch.

At Civity, we are finding hope in YOU.

The response to this summer’s segment about Civity on the PBS NewsHour has been overwhelming. The night the episode ran, we got a rush of more than 200 emails from people across the country – time-zone-by-time-zone as they watched the NewsHour live – thanking us for our work, sending donations, asking “what can I do?” And telling us about what they are already doing in their neighborhood, their workplace, their community.

The messages are still coming in.

The day Civity started, we were given a front-row seat. Every day, we hear from or talk to one, or two, or more people who are reaching out to connect with Civity because our vision and what we do is resonating with them. We’ve been privileged to spend the last ten years with people telling and showing us “this is what I can do.”

And often we are blessed to be able to support them, encourage them, and walk alongside them – as they do it.

Those people are YOU. Every time you take a moment to really SEE someone and HEAR someone, that makes a difference. Every time you connect with someone you might have thought of as “other,” that makes a difference. Every time you show someone else that they MATTER, that makes a difference.

YOU are making a difference.

And this inspires us.

We are extremely busy these days.

We are continuing to challenge the prevailing story that division is inevitable – take a look at Palma’s fun-but-serious piece: Seven Ways to Slice and Dice the Us-vs-Them Bogeyman.

As profiled on PBS, our project with the Association of Leadership Programs (ALP) and the National Leadership Network kicked off this summer with Leadership Rhode Island in Providence. We then traveled to Fort Worth, TX for the ALP national conference – read more in Lucy’s article.

We completed our report on housing in California – Civity Stories: Going to the “Heart” of NIMBY Resistance to Affordable Housing – and we are excited to see many of you at our webinar on October 6! We also invite you to an online “Taste of Civity” sponsored by Welcoming America on September 30!

Finally, we are pleased to announce that – thanks to requests from so many of you – we are offering training workshops that are open to the public! Check out our offerings now (we’re limiting attendance to maximize the interactive experience) and see what works for you.

Thank you for the hope and the inspiration. We can do this … together.

Best wishes to all,

Malka

Seven Ways to Slice & Dice the Us-vs-Them Bogeyman

By Palma Joy Strand

I hear a lot – all of us hear a lot – about the prevalence of Us-vs-Them dynamics. We as a nation certainly believe ourselves to be polarized, though it does seem that when you look local instead of national there is less Us-vs-Them than we often perceive.

But here’s what I also hear about Us-vs-Them: This is just the way it is, the way we are, the way humans are hard-wired. People are inherently tribal – and tribal in an inevitably antagonistic way. This is Us-vs-Them as destiny.

I am wary of the fatalism of Us-vs-Them as destiny to the degree that I’ve started thinking of it as the Us-vs-Them bogeyman – put out there for the purpose of scaring us. (1) I’m simply not convinced that Us-vs-Them as destiny is real; and (2) believing that it is freezes us into inaction.

Civity In Action:

The Draw of the ALP Conference: Connection & Relationships

By Lucy Lantis

In July, Civity Co-Founder Malka and I had the opportunity to lead two Civity workshops in Fort Worth, TX, at the Association of Leadership Programs National Conference. It was our fourth time attending, and somehow it just keeps getting better and better! The reason is simple: relationships.

Each year, we reconnect with people we got to know in years prior and meet others for the first time. There is nothing quite like being in a room with hundreds of leaders… people who go out of their way to introduce themselves, who listen with genuine curiosity, and who want to connect you to the person next to them.

Civity in the News:

Join the #BetterThanThis Movement

Civity joins The National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD), Braver Angels, Living Room Conversations, Disagree Better, Mediators Foundation and dozens of other groups in taking a strong stand against political violence.

The #BetterThanThis movement is a national collective effort joining many people's voices. We know that only a vanishingly small number of Americans support political violence in any meaningful sense. #BetterThanThis gives voice to the vast majority of us who believe that acts of political violence have no place here.

At Civity, we know that we are the ones who create the culture we live in. We can all stand up for seeing and hearing "others"for being in relationship with people who are different, with people we disagree with.

We invite you to get involved in #BetterThanThis.
