Join Plano in Remembering Fallen Peace Officers

The Plano Police Department invites you to be part of the 2022 Peace Officers Memorial service on Thursday, May 19th. During the third week in May, law enforcement agencies across the nation honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.

Police Chief Ed Drain said, “Plano has recognized our fallen peace officers for over 40 years. We believe it is important to continue this today – it’s important for the public, it is important for the officers currently working and most of all, it is important for the families of our fallen officers.”

This free event honors 13 Texas peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service for their community. As of 2022, the City has lost four officers in the line of duty:

  • Deputy City Marshal Green W. Rye – was shot attempting to stop a bank robbery in downtown Plano on February 28, 1920
  • Officer Dayle Weston (Wes) Hardy – died after a motorcycle crash as he attempted to stop a speed violator on July 7, 2007
  • Police Recruit Andrew Sockwell – died while training at the police academy on October 9, 2020
  • Lieutenant Ernie Oldham – passed away from complications due to COVID-19 on September 16, 2021

Plano officials will be joined by representatives from several local-area police honor guards, Collin County leaders, and the other public servants.

Challenge Yourself With Wordl
Wordle is a web-based word game developed by Josh Wardle. A player has six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Feedback is given for each guess, in the form of colored tiles, indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position.

Every day, it's a new five-letter word. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray.

  • Green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position.
  • Yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position.
  • Gray indicates it is not in the answer at all.

Target words may have duplicate letters, such as the "o" in "robot", and the color-coded responses do not clue the player about additional uses of such duplicated letters. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses.

The game also has a dark theme as well as a high-contrast theme for colorblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

Simple Bread Pudding
YIELD: 6 to 8 servings
TIME: 45 minutes

There’s room for customization here: consider adding fresh or dried fruit or a combination of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom.

Consider serving with fresh fruit compote. Or add a handful of chocolate chips before baking for a decidedly more decadent outcome.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 quart milk
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) unsalted butter, more for greasing pan
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • ½ loaf sweet egg bread like challah or brioche, cut into 2-inch cubes (5 to 6 cups)
  • 4 eggs, beaten
PREPARATION
  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small saucepan over low heat, warm milk, butter, vanilla, sugar and salt. Continue cooking just until butter melts; cool. Meanwhile, butter a 2.5-quart casserole dish and fill it with cubed bread.
  2. Add eggs to cooled milk mixture and whisk; pour mixture over bread. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until custard is set but still a little wobbly and edges of bread have browned. Serve warm or at room temperature.

NOTE
Make sure to let the bread soak in the egg-milk mixture; about an hour or more is perfect. Then it will become a beautiful custard.

Opportunity for Non-Members (Who are 50+ Years Old)
SJC has added a daily drop-in fee for those who do not have a membership:

  • $2 for Plano residents
  • $3 for Non-residents

If you have a membership this does not pertain to you. If an Adult 50+ without a membership would like to enjoy the facility, too, they can now for the above fee. They will be required to pay this fee each day they come until they purchase a membership. The daily drop-in fee does not count towards an individual's membership fee unless they pay the daily drop-in fee on the same day they purchase a membership - then the two or three-dollar fee they paid that same day can be applied towards their membership fee.
