Paraprofessional Jessey Mook and seventh-grader Nino Welcome print 3D adaptive tool, lead STEM experiences at Jarrett Middle School ✏️
|
Jessey Mook has a passion for 3D printing and the student he serves, Nino. That's why he custom designed and 3D printed an adaptive tool for Nino's use.
At the beginning of the school year, Nino and Mook set a big, audacious year-end goal: Nino would be able to write his name. Part of his diagnosis makes it difficult for him to hold or clutch, but Mook had an idea and went to the Jarrett library. There, Mook researched adaptive equipment prototypes that could be printed on the school’s 3D printer.
Four weeks into the school year and at 12 years old,
Nino wrote his name for the first time.

Naviance helps sixth-graders explore dozens of careers at their own pace
|
“I have an eight-year plan,” said Ben Cooper Lancaster, a Carver sixth-grader. “I’ll play other sports than football in middle school and start training, then playing next year. Then, I’ll work my way up and get better so I can get a scholarship in high school to play for MSU. Then, I’ll get drafted to go to the NFL. Naviance helps me know how to do that and what efforts to put in to accomplish my goal.”

"I spend my time at Jarrett as part para, part friend, part parent for Nino. As a para, I'm here to help Nino navigate the hallways and take notes in class. As a friend, I just want to help him have a good time at school and enjoy it. But as part parent, I'm here to hold high expectations for Nino. He's capable of so much. He can participate fully with support, and we set big goals."

My SPS Story: Angie Toomey, kindergarten teacher at Westport K-8 School
|
|
"My SPS story starts back in October of 1991. I was hired as a paraprofessional in a cross-categorical classroom. I found that being in the classroom completed me. My childhood dream had always been to be a teacher.
I continue to be a lifelong learner and influenced by wonderful colleagues in my building, which is why I have continued working where I have for the last 30+ years. The community we have built at Westport has evolved and changed over the years, but it has been nothing short of extraordinary to see students that I had in the beginning, bring their kids back to the school, or to see children that were in classes with my two kids, grown up and coming back with their siblings or children of their own.
I am fully invested as a Westport Wildcat and have worn the navy and orange and plan to until the day I finally retire. I love my school family and community and look forward to continuing to learn and grow together as we write our story."
