This Just In...
April 2016
April.
We don't think of it as the cruelest month.
In fact, we adore April for everything that it is and that it isn't. That it brings up the beauty of those first blooms. That it delivers days of spring breezes. For the sounds of birds returning as we trash our rusted snow shovels with the last of the ice melt. It is the sound of the bat on ball (sorry, but somethings are just APRIL and that's one of them) and the smell of the first BBQ. April is hardly the cruelest month. Maybe it's just the most anticipated and subsequently has the most to live up to.
Curse it or praise it - April is here - and so is your latest edition of

Dinner & A Movie
Here's one of our favorite dinners for a wet and blustery April night. Or, ya know, for one that is suddenly sultry and calm and 67 degrees.
Either way, heck of a dish..
Serves 6
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil or good olive oil
1 pound sausage, a combination of hot and sweet,
cut into bite sized pieces
2 - 2 ½ pound chickens, cut into 12 small pieces, bone in or boneless thighs
2 large bell peppers, red, green or yellow, cored, seeded
and cut lengthwise, into ¼ inch strips
1 large yellow onion, cut, lengthwise, into ¼ inch slices
1 teaspoon minced garlic
½ cup chicken broth
½ cup dry white wine
½ cup sliced vinegar hot cherry peppers
½ cup vinegared sweet bell peppers
½ cup vinegar from the peppers, above
½ teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Saute sausage for about 8 minutes. Remove sausage, set aside to drain. Reheat oil, pat chicken dry, and sauté in batches until it is almost cooked through (15 minutes or so). Remove chicken.
2 .Stir in bell peppers ,onion, and garlic and saute for 5 minutes or so, till soft and begin to brown.
3. Add wine and chicken stock, add the sausage and chicken and bring to a boil. Stir in hot and sweet vinegared peppers, vinegar, oregano, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer slowly for 10 minutes or until flavors have combined.
And for that movie...how about
Romance or Thriller/Sci-Fi
The Age of Adaline
After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret.
But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

Ex Machina
Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, Ex Machina. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).
Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test-charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan's latest experiment in artificial intelligence.
That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated--and more deceptive--than the two men could have imagined.

Essex, the quintessential American town, has been selected as one of the best small towns in America. It also has the unique distinction of being one of the very few American towns to ever be attacked by a foreign power.
During the War of 1812, British forces took the town, burned some newly constructed privateers in the harbor and then, thankfully chose not to burn down the town. They did abscond with $100,000 or upwards of rum, though. Today Essex is home to a few more than 6,600 people who share three villages - Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton, home of the Ivoryton Playhouse. For more about one of Daniels Towns - click here.
The Ivoryton Playhouse
- a great venue for a wonderful evening of song and dance. It's next show is: Back Home Again - On the Road with John Denver - April 6-24

April's Art...and The Questions Art Asks
Above a man sits pondering fish outside his window.
The artist is Gerhard Gluck. This illustration raises a question or two. Is it a comment about global warming?
Is it a comment on loneliness and the need to connect?
Is it a statement about eating way
down on the food chain (he has a plate of corn)?
This got us to thinking...what does art ask us to think about? Then we found this handy little short-cut guide to understand art through the ages. And we figured - why not share it with you.
While it might clarify some paintings you've seen - it doesn't answer Mr. Gluck's painting. At least, not for us.
Still, we love it. So maybe that's all it needs to do ask...
What Does Art Ask
* Classical: If you were an Olympian god, what would you be known for?
* Byzantine: Do you prefer gold or silver accessories?
* Medieval: Are you religious?
* Gothic: What is your favourite historic building?
* Renaissance: Have you ever had a time in your life when you felt enlightened or changed?
* Baroque: Do you enjoy the finer things in life?
* Rococo: Is your bedroom full or trinkets and pictures? If so, which pictures adorn your walls?
* Neoclassicism: If something came back into fashion, what do you hope it would be?
* Romanticism: Do you often see things in a positive light?
* Pre-Raphaelite: Which book would you like to see turned into a film?
* Impressionism: Do you look for details or take everything in at once?
* Art Nouveau: When were you last at the theatre?
* Surrealism: Why does the porcupine think it's a duck?
* Pop Art: Do you enjoy pop culture?
*
Contemporary: What did you do today?

Now For Something - Completely Different.
We are all inspired by beauty. Of every variety.
So, in honor of all the beauty that begins to emerge in April we thought we'd ask for your inspirations. Below are five images.
Write us anything - a poem, a one-liner, a caption, 100-words or song lyrics about what one of these images inspires in you. We'll post the winner next month and send along a small parting gift as well. Have fun.
